CCA Previews ’23: Raffles Archives and Museum

Reading Time: 3 minutes

When one thinks of Raffles Institution, one can hardly do so without thinking of its long and storied history. Just like the twin-headed eagle on its school crest, RI is an institution deeply rooted in tradition, even as it aspires to be the “Hope of a Better Age”. That is precisely what interests our combined Y14 and Y56 club: the study and preservation of RI’s extensive history and rich heritage.

With the school set to celebrate its bicentennial in 2023 and gearing up to launch celebrations into full swing, you may see the name Raffles Archives and Museum bouncing around the school often. Indeed, all of our staff and student members have been hard at work over the past year. However, there’s so much more to our CCA than just the bicentennial celebrations!

CCA Previews ’23: Guitar Ensemble

Reading Time: 2 minutes

By Guitar Ensemble EXCO 2022-2023

Have you ever watched guitarists on YouTube in wonder and admiration, and aspired to be just like them? Well, fret not! Raffles Institution Guitar Ensemble (RJGE) is here! RJGE is a fully fledged Niibori guitar ensemble and we dabble in a myriad of musical genres, ranging from folk, to classical, to pop.

We started off our year with an internal farewell concert where we split into small groups and were given the chance to perform our personal favourites. We allowed our creativity to run wild by experimenting with multifarious guitar techniques which synergised with one another to produce melodic masterpieces.

CCA Previews ’23: Art Club

Reading Time: 4 minutes

By Huang Yuan-Ching (Vice-Chairperson)

Welcome to Art Club! The place where experienced artists and amateurs alike come together to create. Here, you would find the perfect balance between ‘Art’ and ‘Club’, and seek refuge in the comfort of making art amidst hectic JC life.

Aspiring Art Clubbers can expect Wednesday 9am–12pm sessions that are chill and laid-back, yet not lacking in artistic rigour whatsoever. A typical session would begin with a lesson on a new skill or medium by our patient and experienced instructors, followed by ample time to experiment and explore said skill/medium on our own, and ending with a gallery walk where we share and discuss our artworks and processes.

CCA Previews’ 23: Alchemy Club

Reading Time: 5 minutes

By Marcus Chu Jian-Hao (Chairperson, 23S03L), Chi Junxiang (Vice Chairperson, 23S03L), Jonelle Tan Wen Qi (Secretary, 23S03D), Matthew Lim Kin-Shuen (Exco Member, 23S03A), Athen Lee Zhi Yu (Exco Member, 23S06I)

Welcome to Alchemy Club! In the past, Alchemists were concerned with the transmutation of matter. In particular, they were attempting to convert base metals into gold. Of course, while Au-some, those attempts were unfortunately futile. Although the art of alchemy is no longer practised and has evolved into modern-day chemistry, the sense of curiosity and passion alchemists embodied is still present and alive today. Alchemy Club (whose name pays homage to the alchemists of the past) is where chemistry enthusiasts like YOU meet to discuss everything and anything about chemistry. Do you conduct your own chemistry experiments at home, spend your free time reading Wikipedia pages or watching chemistry videos (like Nile Red?) or just enjoy “magic”? Perhaps your chemistry lectures leave you with no reaction? Then look no further, for Alchemy Club is just the place for you!
