CCA Previews’ 23: Chess Club

Reading Time: 2 minutes

By Natania Quek (23A01B, Chairperson), and Isaac Teo (23S06E, Vice-Chairperson)

Former world chess champion Garry Kasparov once said, “Chess is life in miniature. Chess is struggle, chess is battles.”

At Raffles Chess Club, we think of chess not just as a game but also as an imitation of life itself. In life, we inevitably hit crossroads where we are forced to make crucial decisions that can alter the trajectory of our lives. Missteps are unavoidable; what determines the future outcome of our endeavours is our receptiveness towards learning from our blunders. Chess is exactly the same: a simulation of life confined within 64 squares. Be prepared for an electrifying game of strategy and tactics that puts your mind to the test!

When you think of the phrase “community advocates”, you might think of globally esteemed philanthropists including Bill Clinton and Warren Buffett, youth activists such as Greta Thunberg, or even celebrity advocates like Angelina Jolie. In Community Advocates, we aim to spotlight the stories of the people we serve and empower them by engaging in meaningful interactions and providing tangible help. In doing so, we embody the essence of Community Advocates: Speak, Act, Change, immortalising the principles of service and advocacy.

“Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without.”

Confucius

RI (Y5-6) Chinese Orchestra (or RICO for short) is musical first, and Chinese second. Koreans of RI

Reading Time: 7 minutes

By Noh Sangeun (23S06Q)

My fun fact is having a backup fun fact: that I’m Korean. As Shin Jiyeon (23S03O) puts it, the common response to this is that everyone already knows.

While it might not make for an exciting self-introduction, being Korean has certainly shaped my experience in Singapore, as it presumably has for the twenty thousand-odd others of Korean nationality living in the country. For this article, I interviewed four Korean RI students to find out more about their perspectives on living in Singapore as Koreans.
