Please Mind the Platform Gap (Universities Edition): Deep Springs College

Nestled in a desert valley in California is a small liberal arts school—Deep Springs College (DSC). The size of each cohort does not exceed 15, and students, in addition to managing their academic work, are expected to participate in labour and governance to prepare them for ‘a life of service’. Redefining education, DSC views students “not as consumers but as creators of their education and as stewards of a joint intellectual project”. Raffles Press spoke to RI alumna Amelia Ding (19A01D) to find out more.

Founded in 1740, the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) is the fourth-oldest institution of higher education in the United States. As an Ivy League university, UPenn is well-known worldwide for its rigorous curriculum as well as its vibrant student life. The university is comprised of 4 schools at the undergraduate level: the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the School of Nursing, and the Wharton School.

In this article, Raffles Press interviews Tao Minghui from RI’s batch of 2016. She is currently a freshman at UPenn.

Indeed, Yale-NUS is a choice to consider not just for those who prefer to study locally, but also for all who wish to immerse themselves in a vibrant environment filled with a thriving school population and dedicated faculty.
