Picture this: you’re facing your opponent, waiting for the referee’s call. Your body is coiled like a spring, with every muscle primed and ready to go as soon as the round begins. 

“En garde, prêts, allez!” You’re already exploding into motion as the final word hangs in the air, aiming to capitalize on the quick start to score an early lead. You lunge forward, with instinct guiding your blade as you parry your opponent and strike directly at their now-unguarded chest. Point to you. Beneath your mask, you’re smiling with satisfaction, already mapping out new plans for the next time you cross blades.

CCA Previews ’23: Raffles Rock

The first thing you hear is the twang of the guitar—a distinct note. Then, the drums, a constant heartbeat reverberating from the soles of your feet to the top of your spine. A bassline follows, teasing and quick. Now the keys chime in, tinkling lightly like faraway bells. And finally, finally, the singer steps up to the mic: “Hello… we are Raffles Rock.”

At Raffles Chess Club, we think of chess not just as a game but also as an imitation of life itself. In life, we inevitably hit crossroads where we are forced to make crucial decisions that can alter the trajectory of our lives.
