CCA Previews ’21: Community Advocates

Reading Time: 4 minutes

By Ian Teng (21S03L), Chairperson and Christine Siow (21A01B), Vice-Chairperson

What is Advocacy?

Advocacy is bringing about change—by reaching out to the community, spreading awareness of societal issues and acting upon them—and then encouraging others to do the same!

What is CA?

Community Advocates (CA) can be considered a rather young service-based CCA, with just 13 years of history in RI. Despite this, we have empowered members and the school community to look beyond just speaking up about issues of concern, so as to play a part in enacting concrete change to the wider community.

CA encompasses two different aspects: Advocacy and Service.

CCA Previews ’21: Tennis

Reading Time: 2 minutes

By Aneish Sawney (21S06T), Boys’ Captain and Portia McCully (21S03G), Girls’ Captain

You stand with your feet apart, knees slightly bent, and lift the ball into the air. You stare at the ball as it slowly sails into the sky and think back to the multitude of training sessions, gruelling conditioning workouts and intense psychological preparation, all for this one moment, this one point, this one serve.

Now, tennis is not just a game of pure power, but also a form of art. Rather than sending ballistic missiles up and down the court, tennis requires a certain kind of elegance. Each point must be delicately crafted to outsmart and outlast the opponent through the use of a variety of shots, be it a lob or a dropshot.

CCA Previews ’21: Raffles Chorale

Reading Time: 3 minutes

By Praakhar Agrawal (21S03B), Chairperson and Gwen Wu (21S06G), Welfairy

Melodies intertwine, and pristine harmonies coalesce into a hushed chord, holding the audience in bated breath. With the gentlest raise of the conductor’s palms, the music swells to its crescendo and voices unite, soaring to fill the concert hall with all its triumph, and the beauty of music shines through. When emotions run high on the stage—excitement, and perhaps a bit of anxiety—and you finally hit that difficult note perfectly after months of hard work, you hear that perfect blend of harmony. Truly, this is what music is all about.

Raffles Chorale is a blend of singers hailing from diverse backgrounds—be it the passionate chorister or occasional bathroom singer. Wander near LT1, and you might hear voices singing. Don’t worry, it isn’t a resident ghost, you’ve just happened to catch us during practice!

CCA Previews ’21: Netball

Reading Time: 3 minutes

By Tan Shannon (21S03M), Amelia Ee (21S06B) and Sarah Khoo (21S06R)

Raffles Netball—a rowdy, rambunctious family that plays hard and works hard!

We train three times a week during season, and twice a week off-season. Court training sessions with our Coach Mr Goh Seck Tuck (aka Jiaolian) usually involve ball and skill work, as well as working on our play as a team. Our weekly Strength and Conditioning sessions with Coach Nithiya (aka Coachie) usually involve a trip to the school gym, along with speed and agility sessions, which help us to condition our bodies so that we can perform on court to the best of our abilities. Having training three times a week may seem like a lot to some, but fret not, because you will be sure to leave each training sweaty and with a smile on your face, looking forward to the next one!
