Pressing Ahead 2025: Re-defining Student Journalism

Reading Time: 9 minutes

By Gladys Koh (26A01B) and Kunchur Bharat (26A01B)

In 2025, Pressing Ahead marks its ninth year. Similar to 2024’s edition, we kicked off our Saturday bright and early at 8.30 am. This year, we were fortunate to have with us guests from Victoria Junior College, Eunoia Junior College, River Valley High School, Hwa Chong Institution, Catholic Junior College, Dunman High School, and NUS High School of Mathematics and Science, who brought with them a shared spirit of collaboration and passion for journalism.

However, that’s where the similarities end this year. Unlike previous editions, this year’s theme, “Elevating and Amplifying Student Journalism”, was not about preparing students for a career in professional journalism. Why You Aren’t Reading This Article: An Analysis of Press Engagement Rates

Over the course of this year, I have had the opportunity to meet many new faces. By now, having gone through many rounds of self-introduction, I have defaulted to sharing my CCA as a conversation starter. And I can anticipate the very first question the other person would ask:

It’s understandable when I’m meeting new people from outside school, but the thing is that this question is also often asked by my fellow batch mates. Many don’t even know this CCA exists.

So, the aim of this article is to tackle the issue of how to reduce the number of students asking these questions every year.

With the clickbait title out of the way, let’s go into a deep dive on why our very own CCA has yet to solidify itself in the impressions of the school population, and if there’s anything we can do about it.

CCA Previews ‘24: Raffles Press

What defines the student journalist?

Such a question is intentionally complex. It is one to be contemplated pensively and poetically on a Bukit Timah hillside, or more practically, on a bench next to the school bookshop. One to pop up unexpectedly in the post-coverage high, when you are breathless from the rush of yet another school victory or interviewing fascinating people.

Pressing Ahead 2022: Through the Journalist’s Lens

Reading Time: 6 minutes

Where does the journalist look for newsworthy stories? Where does the future of journalism lie? These are two areas of exploration that Raffles Press’ annual Inter-JC Conference, Pressing Ahead, seeks to uncover in greater depth.

Against the backdrop of the world’s largest newspaper publications venturing into multimedia journalism, how we, as student journalists, can harness the power of photo, audio and video to supplement our craft, is definitely something worth contemplating and conversing about.

“Can I have an Aburi Chicken Don please?”
“My hit rate with aunties is quite high.”
“Mr Patrick Wong, you are not allowed to participate in the game.”

Where do a chicken don, aunties and Mr Patrick Wong (Raffles Press’s beloved teacher in-charge) come together? Raffles Press’s annual inter-JC conference, Pressing Ahead, of course!
