Pre-game

11.15am, 14 April 2026: The bus carrying classes of Rafflesians hisses to a stop at Our Tampines Hub, doors sliding open to unload the match supporters that will be cheering on the Boys’ Water Polo team at their NSG finals in minutes. Some clutch onto creative boards adorned with pictures and personalised messages to support their friends in the match.

11.28am, at the grandstands overlooking the swimming pool: The Rafflesian match supporters ramp up the noise with a hearty Rafblood cheer. Hwa Chong Institution, not to be outdone, responds with one of their own cheers. School spirit was coursing through every individual’s veins as they geared up for  the  NSG finals.

11.29am: Splashes announce the players’ entrance into the pool, filling the air with the smell of chlorine. The atmosphere instantly electrifies, and all eyes are on the fourteen players lining up in the pool: seven in white caps, and seven in black.

11.30am: The whistle is blown on the dot. The calm surface of the water is immediately thrown into a flurry as all fourteen players surge towards the centre of the pool, focused entirely on the red-and-yellow ball that has just been thrown into the arena.

The game has begun.

A well-deserved celebration

As the swimmers take their places on the starting blocks, the air is buzzing with anticipation and nerves. In that moment, the pool transforms into a stage of determination, skill and sheer willpower, with the countless years spent training leading up to this very moment. The silence is quickly interrupted by the sharp sound of the beep, followed by the loud splash of bodies diving into the waters in perfect synchronisation.

With every stroke meticulously executed, their kicks and breaths— perfected through the numerous hours in the pool— are precise calculations. This year, Raffles Press is proud to announce that the RI Swim Team has achieved 1st in the Girls’ category and 2nd in the Boys’ category overall.

Upbeat music blasted through the complex as elderly women engaged in their routine classes—the tranquil ripples of the first pool contrasted with the heavy splashes of the other. Next to the seemingly wholesome Zumba class, a whole different league of water sports, Water Polo was taking place.

“Go Raffles, go Raffles, go! Take them on, take them on!”

It wasn’t Raffles’ first time going against the Victoria Junior College team in the finals. Both schools have been grappling for the champion title for years. VJC has defended its champion title for the past 2 years, narrowly beating the Rafflesian team 2-1 in 2022 and 6-4 in 2023.

A sense of trepidation clouded the atmosphere, as the same thought filled everyone’s minds: Could it really be that “Third Time’s the Charm”?
