Is the Further Maths Class What You Think It Is?

Is the Further Mathematics (FM) class really full of nerds? Does everyone do nothing but Maths and Physics?

Indeed, most FM students have a flair for Maths, but the majority of us do not love doing it as a hobby. (Admittedly, many of us took FM to avoid having to take Chemistry.) But there are indeed a handful of us who treat Maths as a hobby. They enjoy even reading undergraduate-level Maths and discussing abstract concepts with one another—truly a match made in heaven.

On Thursday afternoon, 18th April 2024, the Water Polo Boys’ NSG Finals Match can conclude in one of only two ways.

The first? RI loses. Their fervent rivals, Hwa Chong, take back the crown that slipped from their grasp after HCI narrowly lost the finals 7-5 last year. The 13 players from RI will have 13 losses, 13 defeats and 13 servings of disappointment. It’ll be red, yellow and gold in the water once again.

The other? RI wins. The team in green, black and white solidifies their status as reigning champions after clinching their first A Division NSG championship in 5 years in 2023. 13 wins, 13 celebrations, and perhaps, 13 bald heads. (Rumour has it that the team made a pact to buzz their hair off should they win.)

So swimming should be classified as an individual sport, right? You would think so, but that’s not it at all!

Thrifting—an activity most of us have heard of before, with some of us even partaking in it regularly. On paper, thrifting means buying pre-loved clothing, furniture and other household items from a thrift store at a discounted price.

But for many of us, thrifting isn’t just about getting the things we need. Since you never know what gems you might encounter in a thrift store, the experience of flipping through racks upon racks of clothing to find the perfect item for yourself is just as exciting.

Let’s Talk: Performing Arts Deserve Love Too

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Raffles Players takes the stage. Applause is scattered and thin.

The Raffles Players SYF Arts Presentation on 18 April saw nearly no Rafflesians in the audience, save for some Players members, teachers, and two Raffles Press journalists.

This isn’t, however, because Players is unpopular or bad — in fact, their production of More by Haresh Sharma was positively stellar, winning them their first Distinction in eight years — but because it was scheduled at 10.30 am on a Thursday when the rest of the school is slogging away in class.
