Ever watched the Volleyball Tokyo 2020 Olympics? Ever ogled over the Japanese Volleyball players, Ran Takahashi and Yuji Nishida, for their good looks and amazing skills? How about the famous volleyball anime, Haikyuu? If you loved watching volleyball as much as we did, but have not had the chance to learn more about volleyball, fret not! Let us explain what this spectacular sport is all about!

So, what is volleyball?

The core of volleyball is simple: don’t let the ball touch the floor. To truly play the game, one needs to work hard on the many unique skills that volleyball requires—digs, sets, spikes, serves, and even dives. Mastering these foundations are crucial and may take some time to build, hence they require utmost level of dedication and patience. Any small mistakes in stance or movement could send the ball flying in the wrong direction.

RU looking for a CCA experience you won’t forget? RU looking for a chance to push yourself past your limits? RU looking for a team you can call family?

Then RU is the place foR U!

A game of Ultimate Frisbee is played with 7 players in a team, with each team’s goal being to catch a disc in the end-zone at the opposite end of the field. Ultimate is a unique sport in the essence that it is self-refereed and relies on the Spirit of the Game, which is built upon the values of integrity, honour and respect. Every player is responsible for upholding the rules of the game. As our coach aptly puts it, “better person, better player”.

CCA Previews ’22: Track and Field

Beyond the irreversible singlet and high-sock tan lines, track and field is home to contagious laughter and fond memories. As a team, we train, bleed, cry and compete together. Some of us may describe the CCA as more of a social club—we aren’t lying—but that’s precisely what makes us a family beyond our individual events.

People typically associate Track with gruelling training sessions and loud JBL music. While these are undeniably the norm, the most unique aspect of our team will always be our teammates, and how we go through all the highs and lows together. Everyone has a special place in this 30-odd-member large family, be it as a sprinter, jumper, thrower or pole vaulter.

The ball soars through the air across the field… mud streaks our white jerseys as we dive across the turf, giving it our all to save that ONE RUN and get our team over the line. Though we toil hard under the sweltering heat for hours on end, the brackish taste of the dripping sweat that trickles down to our lips reminds us of nothing apart from Our Final Goal in Mind.

At Raffles Cricket, we never yield and focus only on the field.

One of the oldest CCAs in Raffles Institution, Cricket, historically also known as the ‘Gentleman’s Game’, has origins dating back to as early as 18th century England. Today, the modern game is enjoyed by millions and is in fact one of the most popular sports in the world. Although easy on the eye, cricket is a demanding sport in a myriad of aspects – rigorously testing one’s cricketing skills not only in batting, bowling and fielding, but also one’s mental strength to endure long hours out on the field. These long hours are usually under tough natural conditions while we constantly strive to maintain the presence of mind and focus to make quick, incisive decisions.
