CCA Previews ’22: Raffles Press

Reading Time: 4 minutes

By Mei Feifei (22A13A), Chairperson

The term ‘student journalist’ can sound quite pretentious. If all we do is (apparently) recapitulate school events or provide information on CCAs, subjects and programmes, what distinguishes us from any random r/AskRaffles? Furthermore, how can we expect a student to fully take on the demands of being a true journalist, given their limited time, energy and experience?

In other words, can we at Raffles Press truly call ourselves ‘journalists’?

The first question is easier to answer. Established in 2006, Raffles Press has since dabbled in a variety of genres and subjects. We have featured our campus’ unsung heroes, trained as librarians, covered the Kiwi Cup, and reviewed bubble tea

CCA Previews ’22: Boys Brigade Primers

Reading Time: 5 minutes

By Terelyn Leong (22S03B) and Maegan-Ruth Tan, Exco Member (22S03K)

Any S03 student will tell you that a primer is a strand of nucleic acid that serves as a starting point for DNA synthesis. But what is a BB Primer? The Primers Programme is a structured programme for 16-18 year old youths administered by the Boys’ Brigade Singapore (BB). It offers a diverse range of experiences, from adventure expeditions to leadership development and community service. More importantly, in the Raffles Institution Boys’ Brigade (RIBB), Primers are like the older brothers and sisters (Yes! Girls can join BB too :) of the Y1-4 Boys in RIBB.

When you picture a uniform group, you might imagine doing marching and drills. While RIBB upholds a high level of discipline, we also conduct a multitude of other activities as well, like camps, sports, and music!

CCA Previews ’22: Raffles Debaters

Reading Time: 3 minutes

By Trevor Lee (22A13A)

This is it. Your opponent has just finished to a resounding round of applause, gracefully taking their seat as all eyes turn expectantly onto you. You glance through once more at the points hurriedly scribbled on your cue cards and the frantic tracking of whatever your opponents have just said. You are convinced they are wrong, and it’s time to prove it. With a well-practiced front of confidence and bravado, you hammer into your opponent’s flimsy arguments with sharp wit, fiery rhetorical flair and unassailable facts and logic.

Except you haven’t, apparently, because you are instead met with quizzical looks from the audience members. It seems that for all your rebuttals, constructive material, analysis and structural reasons, you’ve managed to forget one crucial detail that underpins the entirety of your case.
