CCA Previews ’24: Raffles Photographic Society

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Photography seems to be one of those professions that need very little work—click a button on the camera and you’ve made art… right? In reality, the process behind each photo is a lot more intricate. In Raffles Photographic Society, we learn more about this process, both by making good use of our cameras and by crafting photos that tell stories.

We put these skills to work by taking photos of events occurring in our school such as Founders’ Day, National School Games, House Days, concerts and many more! We’ve also collaborated with other CCAs such as Raffles Runway and Raffles Entrepreneurs’ Network where we conduct studio shoots for their showcases.

We have definitely captured your interest by now. Where and when are CCA sessions? Training sessions are held in school on Tuesdays from 4:30-6:30pm. During sessions, we learn the skills and gain interesting insights from photography professionals, get personalised photography advice, and practice shooting. When we aren’t shooting, we engage in batch bonding activities to foster camaraderie and friendship.

Outside of CCA time, we actively participate in our photographic ventures. Some programmes unique to our CCA include creating a batch photobook, organising photo exhibitions and conducting photography event coverage. We also take part in various photography competitions such as the Singapore Youth Photographers’ Convention and Our Schools, Our Stories organised by MOE.

Outdoor Shoots

To expose members to a wide range of photography genres, we also conduct outdoor shoots during our training sessions! These shoots range from places filled with greenery, such as MacRitchie Reservoir, to the concrete jungles of the CBD.

Photobook

Every photographer has a story to share. At the end of Year 5, every RPS photographer will get to tell their story through their lenses. The photobook serves as a collection of memories for the many adventures of RPS photographers.

Exhibition

Every year, the Year 6 photographers will plan, organise and curate a photo exhibition. Through the photo exhibition, they will be able to present their photography works which hold significant meaning to them.

Events

As an RPS photographer, you will get the opportunity to practise your skills by taking photos with fellow members at most major school events, including sports games and concerts, and even studio photoshoots!

The big question—should you join RPS?

Capturing memories, places, people, feelings and messages through photos sounds complicated. But if you enjoy taking beautiful photos of anything, RPS is the place for you to learn how to take even better ones and express yourself!

Note that you will not require a camera or any prior photography experience to join. As long as you have the passion and commitment to learn photography, you’ll have fun!
