CCA Previews ’23: Dragon Boating

Reading Time: 2 minutes

By Eu Mei Yi (Girls Chairperson), Atiqah Zahra Ahmed and Rachel-Anne Liew (Girls Vice-Chairpersons), Ainsley Sim (Boys Chairperson), Jorge Tay and Aaron Nee (Boys Vice-Chairpersons)

The day is finally here. As beads of perspiration trickle down your forehead, you hold your paddle up high, anticipating the command: “Ready, set, GO!”. Your heart beats hard and fast in your chest and you feel adrenaline pumping through your veins. The sound of your teammates cheering and counting together with each stroke stirs up passion in your heart, encouraging you to put every ounce of energy into each stroke.

Welcome to Raffles Dragonboating. If this sounds like the CCA for you, we invite you to come down for trials.

In our endeavour to hone our skills and fitness, our CCA trains 3 times a week in 2-hour long sessions – on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays – with both land and water training. For land training, we head down to the school gym to do circuit training, consisting of cardio and weight training. For water training, we train at Kallang Water Sports Centre (KWSC) or Singapore Dragon Boat Association (SDBA) to perfect our stroke form.

Being a developmental sport, there are no prerequisites for becoming a dragonboater—other than a good attitude and a willingness to train hard, even outside of the designated CCA time.  Most importantly, a boat will only surge forward and win the race when every member works together in unison, cheering each other on to paddle to the very end. It is this team spirit and camaraderie, coupled with the desire to never let your teammates down, that drives each and every one of us to give our all in training and push each other to our very limits.

All in all, as long as you are willing to work together in a team and give your 100%, we welcome YOU to join our family. RAFFLES ROW!
