Do you have a passion for biology? And…are you a fungi or fungal?? 🍄 Because we w-ant you!
As a student-led CCA, we have the freedom to explore various different activities to bond with CCA members, be it going to the labs and doing dissections, playing bio-related games, or simply having a chill~ ✨intellectual✨ discussion on brain cells. Of course, lectures are very much avoided here (thank YEW) and sessions include fun games such as Jeopardy and Kahoot!
Like plants, we enjoy being outside and under the sun. In BioSoc, you’ll experience camps (pre-pandemic), gardening, and our very own Amazing Race (the occasional friendly competition won’t hurt :D)! The Mendelian walkway near the Marymount gate is also one of our favourite spots in school. From Milkweed plants to butterfly pea flowers, it is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. You can also look forward to hands-on activities like insect catching and raising your very own tiger butterflies (which lay eggs on these Milkweeds)!
How do you think Charles Darwin discovered evolution? It is definitely not by sitting in the classroom staring out of the window. So, in BioSoc, we also go on field trips to discover new things for ourselves as well.
Pre-pandemic, we had the privilege of going on field trips to Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve, Gardens by the Bay, Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum and more! However, with the ongoing Covid-19 situation, we have adapted to virtual field trips, such as live tours at the NUS School of Medicine’s Anatomy Museum. (Charles would not let anything get in the way of discovery.)
You might want to take your passion for the sciences beyond the JC curriculum, but are at a loss as to how to do so. To help you out, we help organise training sessions for the International Biomedical Quiz (IBMQ) every year, where we invite alumni who are doctors to come back and teach students about particular topics in medicine, such as infectious diseases, otorhinolaryngology (study of the ears, nose, and throat), etc. This will give you a taste of what it is like to be a medical student as well as learn about what it is like to be a doctor!
From playing skribbl.io and Kahoot to watching cute animal documentaries (AWW), CCA is fun and engaging for all its members, be it online or in person, pandemic or not! After all, our brains love learning in a fun and exciting environment.
The thymine of our CCA sessions is 4.30pm to 6.30pm every Thursday! Every session, you will get the opportunity to explore other realms of interests outside the school curriculum. Want to learn about medicine? Sure! Zoology? Of course! Forensic science? Yes! You get to choose what you would like to learn, even if it’s about how alpacas’ furry legs protect them from the cold.
The best thing about BioSoc is the friendships we form. Through our variety of activities, members can bond and have fun, taking a break from the mundane school life while immersing themselves in the natural world. Our beloved teachers-in-charge are also here to share their expertise in everything biology-related. Their passion for biology is infectious!
As an interest-based CCA, everyone is welcome here, regardless of your subject combination! The only prerequisite is a passion for biology and a willingness to keep an open mind when interacting with fellow club members. If you are interested in our programmes and tailored content, BioSoc is definitely the perfect place for you! So, what are you waiting for? We look forward to having you as part of our BioSoc family!
