CCA Previews ’18: Raffles Symphonic Band

Reading Time: 4 minutes

By Emil Tay (18A01B), Secretary

If you’ve ever dropped by the Yusof Ishak Block in the far-flung lands of RI’s Year 1-4 campus on weekdays (and some weekends), you might have heard the distant strains of music floating by (or depending on who’s present, a not-so-distant trumpet fanfare). That would be where the members of the Raffles Symphonic Band (RSB) gather to share in what unites us: a love for music.

By Lim En Li Coco (18S05A), Chairperson; Teo Yao Neng (18S06R), Vice-Chairperson; Elysia Tong Xin Wei (18S03N), Secretary; Shaikha Husna Binte Mustaffa Alkhatib (18S03S), Welfare IC; Alex Lim Yishuen (18S03T), Treasurer

Every batch of RSD is different in its own special way. We are a bunch of fun-loving crazy people brought together by our common love for dance. We may not have come from the same backgrounds or similar dance experience levels, but through all the hours we spent together in and outside of CCA practice sessions, we have certainly become closer and stronger as our own batch of 27.

If you’ve ever ventured near the fourth level of Block D, you might have heard some mysterious noises coming from a dubious looking room with a shady red sign above it. Rest assured, nothing illegal goes on in the jamming studio. Instead, the door is a magical portal, taking you to the wonderful land of Raffles Rock, a land of music, fun, and noise-induced hearing loss.

CCA Previews ‘18: Raffles Players

Reading Time: 7 minutes

By Kiara Nicole Pillai (18A01B), Chairperson

Being in Raffles Players is like going for a huge buffet while you’re on a diet. You know you’ll only have five helpings at most, four of which will be servings of vegetables. And you’re proud of yourself, and you feel great, looking around at everyone else who doesn’t have as much self-discipline as you do. But then, one thing leads to another, and you’ve somehow consumed half your weight in chocolate cake – and yet, somehow, you can’t bring yourself to care, because it was the best dessert spread in your entire life.

CCA Previews ’18: Raffles Modern Dance

Reading Time: 2 minutes

By Soon Weilin (18S03L), Chairperson

Under the tutelage of resident choreographer and dance coach Mrs Low Mei Yoke, modern dancers meet for practice every Monday (4-5.30) and every Wednesday (2.30-5.30). Through various exercises, which range from movements in slow-motion to sprints, leaps and rolls across the floor, dancers learn to control every single part of their bodies. Improvisation exercises help build up our musicality and train us to think on our feet. Occasionally, dancers learn to build on their chemistry through Pas De Deux (partner work) exercises.
