In this whole new season of Raffles Runway, the show is back with 10 new designers. They are bold, fierce, and ready to give their all. Faced with emotional highs and lows, how will they prevail?
Every Wednesday morning from 8-11am, Runway members gather to take lessons from instructors (including some who are well-known in the local fashion circle). In the first year, we learn about the various stages in the conceptualisation of a garment, practising important skills such as pattern drafting and sewing in preparation for our senior project. Of course, we can’t forget a healthy dose of eye-opening trips to fashion exhibitions, where we learn about Singapore’s thriving fashion scene and find sparks of inspiration to ignite creativity in our minds.
Through each session, we build not just our foundations in fashion, but our friendships as well. Be it the lending of a helping hand by a fellow member when your sewing needle breaks or commiserating over being unable to sew a perfectly straight line, small moments like these colour our journey in Runway. In the second year, we have the opportunity to plan a fashion collection, right down to the designated theme, set design and garment choice. Previous seasons have stunned and dazzled, and each generation has the chance to orchestrate their magnum opus and reach new highs.
More importantly, outside of sessions, we, the designers, get to bond through lively discussions. With conversations on topics ranging from the latest hits and flops at the Met Gala to the outfits in the latest musical rendition of Mean Girls, it’s safe to say that fashion has become part and parcel of our designers’ lives. It is no surprise that you will sometimes find members on their fabric run to Chinatown, searching high and low for that perfect roll of fabric at the perfect price, while still juggling two unfinished projects.
Additionally, Runway is a space where everyone can find a place for themselves. We forge our CCA culture while creating a myriad of memories, be it the discovery of our shared love for the movie “Cruella” or simply enjoying each other’s presence while working on our newest projects and blasting Chappell Roan.
We might not all be cut from the same cloth, but each designer is sure to find camaraderie and kinship in the safe haven of Runway. Here, you’ll find a plethora of unique styles and visions—some informed by experience, others bustling with beginner’s gusto, yet all bound by our undying passion for fashion.
