CCA Previews ‘24: Film Society

Reading Time: 3 minutes

We hope you enjoyed our video preview (courtesy of Batch ’23)! If you were intrigued by it, know that you’re in for a ride; it barely scratches the surface of the magic behind filmmaking. Indeed, film is remarkable. It is the melding of each member’s creative visions, coupled with moving parts seamlessly working together, that culminates in cohesive, compelling cinema.

With this knowledge, it is no wonder that the art of filmmaking is often compared to magic. And with Film Society, in just two years, you’ll get the opportunity to experience that magic, too.

Our sessions take place on Wednesdays from 8–11 am in the classrooms right beside the MEP room. We don’t stay cooped up, simply listening to filmmaking-centric lectures, though. During each session, plenty of opportunities are present for us to embark on mini-projects for hands-on practice.

Numerous camera features, slightly-off lighting and an abundance of wires might seem daunting at first, but don’t worry. Most of us enter the Society with just the sheer will and passion to create–which, itself, will be sufficient to tide you through filmmaking’s technicalities.

Our sessions are also often mentored by working industry professionals who specialise in myriad fields, such as directing, cinematography and editing, so don’t worry if you don’t have prior experience in filmmaking yet!

All these culminate in our Thesis Film Showcase, where Film Soc-cers write, direct, and edit our own films (alongside casting actors, finding the right locations, and all else that comes with independent filmmaking).

The painstaking efforts we take to realise our creative visions are not futile, however, as the showcase shines a spotlight on our burgeoning filmmaking journeys to the larger school population—because all artists need the occasional spotlight, don’t we?

We hear of auteurs like Hitchcock and Tarantino, but their cinematic visions can only be brought to life with those whose names scroll past long after the theater has been emptied. And between these people–no matter how small their roles–a shared invigoration and passion for filmmaking is borne, fed and flamed.

Some of you might want to become filmmakers, while some of you might not – and that’s alright. These two years in Film Society with us will induct you into a timeless community of friends, whose ties are strengthened through the shared undercurrent that is a love for all things film.
