CCA Previews ’24: Malay Cultural Society

In the diverse yet immense community at Raffles, Malay representation may be modest in comparison but the spirit of the Raffles Malay Cultural Society (MCS) is anything but small.

Unbeknownst to many, we are a vibrant group dedicated to celebrating and preserving Malay culture. Here at MCS, we organise a diverse array of activities for both members and non-members, ranging from cultural workshops to VIA projects and literary pursuits.

Looking for something physical? We have Silat! Seeking creative pursuits instead? We offer batik painting and the art of Tanjak weaving, a traditional headpiece worn by Malay men.

Hari Raya Music Video

This year we created music videos set to iconic Hari Raya tunes, all while adorned in glamorous and colourful outfits.

Our in-house activities are designed to foster ‘ukhwah’—a bond rooted in shared origin and beliefs which creates a sense of brotherhood—and ‘siratulrahmi’, the maintenance and mending of ties within our close-knit community in school. Most importantly, MCS serves as an opportunity for us to respire from the demands of school life in the company of friends.

A cherished tradition within MCS is our annual iftar night during the fasting month, where we come together to break fast and spend time together. Such traditions define the essence of MCS, crafting core memories for our members and reinforcing our CCA’s purpose: to cultivate genuine friendships and connections.

One thing to note is that our CCA is not exclusive to Malays only! We welcome anyone from any background to join our activities and celebrations.

Our yearly tradition of iftar night

Our meetings are held weekly on alternate Thursdays from 4.30-6.30pm in our cosy MLEP room, and are facilitated by our dedicated teachers in charge. We extend a warm invitation to you to join us in our CCA, where the richness of Malay culture and hospitality comes to life!
