It was the 17th of August. The air was lively with children’s laughter as they raced around in a game of musical chairs. Parents looked on with smiles on their faces, making small talk with fellow residents. This scene was the heart of a grocery drive pop-up organised by Raffles’ very own Community Advocates CCA in collaboration with the resident contributors of Teck Ghee and Allkin Singapore, a community-driven social service agency. This event was more than just a grocery distribution—it aimed to spread the joy of coming together, as well as the spirit of sharing and caring.

But behind this carefully planned event, was weeks of effort and hard work behind-the-scenes…

Raffles Business Symposium 2024: Are business competitions all talk, no action?

“Spark positive change” is a clause plucked out, verbatim, from the opening address of this year’s Raffles Business Symposium (RBS). This year’s theme is: “Innovations to Improve Mental Health”; the task follows naturally: to conceptualise, prepare and pitch a business idea within the mental health sector. I feel that I am falling behind and becoming detached. Most of my classmates have good grades, student leadership roles and big social circles. It’s difficult not to compare because I’m failing while my friends, who have the same opportunities, succeed. I’m also becoming jealous of other people’s quality friendships and fear that my own friends will abandon me, which has led me to seek external validation. I’ve been suppressing my emotions by distracting myself with exercise and studies, but this has made me more emotionally detached.

“RI toilets give me depression. I feel sad every time I enter and come out even sadder. It’s a very miserable place to pee.

I feel like gender roles and societal norms still get in the way of forming genuine platonic relationships with my schoolmates of the opposite sex. People over-romanticise my interactions with them, so I feel the need to be hyper-aware of the way I act around them, even though I only see them as friends.
