All’s Fair in Love and War: Literature Week 2016

Students may have noticed quotes that have materialised on the walls next to lifts, lecture theatres and corridors over the paste week. Examples include “There is a castle on a cloud” and “And miles to go before I sleep” (fittingly written outside LT1). Reactions ranged from pleasant surprise to bewilderment.  As one student put it, “just because it’s pretty doesn’t mean it’s not vandalism”.

The quotes alone, however, constituted only a small part of this year’s Literature Week (abbreviated as Litweek) in RI. Following the theme of “War”, a string of exciting activities were organised for students throughout the week, and the canteen turned  into an active area for literature-related setups.

Founders’ Day Carnival 2016

Press Freedom – Breaking Free from the Tyranny of [REDACTED]: Hodge Lodge Debate Series II

The World Press Freedom Index ranks Singapore 154th out of 180 countries –  the 85th percentile. In terms of press freedom, Singapore is barely staying out of remedial.  Discussions about the presence, role and freedom of the media in Singapore never exclude buzzwords like ‘authoritarianism’,’ ‘free speech’, ‘draconian’ and ‘harmony’, but what do these terms actually mean?

Budget Cuts and the School: Dialogue with the Principal and Vice-Principals 2016

Meeting Mr Chan along the walkways whilst one is at school is not a rare occurrence at all. A friendly wave, an exchange of some pleasantries, and you’re off. Nonetheless, moments of extended conversation with him – or any of the Principals – should be treasured.  Three principals, two town hall sessions, and one open dialogue: following the brief but refreshing dialogue held during the Y6 Assembly before the June break, the journalists of Raffles Press adjourned to a interview with the three principals and deputy principals, to get up close and honest with their thoughts on some current school concerns.
