Rising to the Challenge: Boys’ Squash Finals 2022

If you’re anything like me—the antithesis of athleticism and general sports awareness—chances are you know very little about this game called squash. 

Aside from sharing its name with a type of vegetable, Squash essentially involves players going head to head in a literal cage match conducted in a four-walled court. The game is played with a racquet and a hollow rubber ball, and players take turns hitting the ball; whoever can place the ball out of reach of their opponent while avoiding specific zones within the court wins. 

The match on Monday between RI and ACS(I) kicked off with great fanfare at noon, amidst the cacophony of cheers from both sides. Being my first time spectating an actual game of squash, I couldn’t help but notice both players entering the air-conditioned glass court for every set almost seemed like observing a scientific experiment in a cold, sterile lab.

Coming Back for Gold, Three Years Later: Girls’ Squash Finals 2022

On 10 May, the Kallang Squash and Tennis Centre was filled with an air of trepidation and excitement as spectators trickled in to watch the Squash Girls’ Finals 2022. This marked the first National School Games (NSG) season since 2019, and RI’s squash girls were ready to defend their championship title.

This year, RI faced long-time rival Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC) in the finals. Amidst enthusiastic cheers, Waverly Wu (22S03F) stepped up to play the first game of the finals. The first shot was served in a resounding thud, and the game had officially begun.

Smashing the Competition: Girls’ Badminton Finals 2022

After scoring a clean sweep of 5 matches against RVHS in the semi-finals, the RI Girls’ Badminton team returned to the courts once again to take on their long-time rival, Hwa Chong Institution (HCI), in the A Division Finals on 9 May.   

Team captain Ilisha Tanasekar (22S03M) had said after the semi-final match that the team was eager to “continue their winning streak from the previous years before COVID.” Being the favourites, the team felt increased pressure to live up to their past record, which proved to be more difficult considering how the pandemic had affected their training sessions.

Film Society Screening: H(ODD)GE L(ODD)GE

“Whoa, there was a theatre behind Hodge Lodge this whole time?” These were the exact words of Edna Lim (22S03F), taking her first steps into the Hodge Lodge theatre.

On a quiet afternoon of 4th May, a gap Wednesday, Rafflesians streamed into a relatively unassuming room beyond the main lounge area of the Hodge Lodge. H(ODD)GE L(ODD)GE marked the event’s revival after a COVID-19 induced hiatus. The (bi)annual event serves as a means for the school community to enjoy Film Society curated films, and learn more about the craft during discussion segments.

To participants’ pleasant surprise, 40 plush, rich velvet red chairs invited them in. Quickly getting comfortable, they were about to find themselves tickled, perhaps even outright baffled, by the four experimental films lined up.

An Unyielding Spirit: Rugby Finals 2022

6 May 2022 was a swelteringly hot day as the MOE Evans Road field stand filled rapidly with eager spectators. The atmosphere was electric. Student Councillors kicked off the drum beat, leading the Rafflesian crowd in a set of boisterous cheers. Not to be outdone, the ACS(I) students, clad in their signature red, blue, and gold responded with a round of their own shouting—testimony to the long-standing ACS(I)-RI rugby rivalry. 

This year would mark the latest match in the finals against ACS(I), our long-time rival.
