Pressing Ahead 2017: The Community Through The Journalist’s Eye

Student journalist – not exactly the most prestigious job around, or even one that is frequently sought after. Nor is it an easy job, with frequent late nights on Google Docs, scouring for website-worthy pictures and harassing subjects for interviews. While student journalists around Singapore may have had a taste of the perils that the job brings, the kind of experience that each journalist has would undoubtedly vary from school to school.

Raffles Press’ Pressing Ahead Conference provided the opportune platform for student journalists from 7 very different institutions to collaborate and learn from one another.

CCA Previews ’17: Raffles Press

It is odd—how after editing the tenth CCA Preview, I am still struggling to put Press into words. It is odd, because it is always the other way round. Probably no CCA in RI has shared such great affinity with Google Docs, Microsoft Word, and WordPress; or the odd tiff with blank pages on 3 am mornings when the mind starts to be more functional.

Get Up On Your (Press) Soapbox!

While the word soapbox may carry negative connotations today, its origins are rooted in a history of public discourse from everyday people about issues that mattered to them. The literal soapbox in itself – a wooden crate which members of the public use as a platform to voice their thoughts in a public setting – underlies the nature of soapboxing. This environment of freely expressing one’s thoughts in public may come to define the freedom of speech in America, or create spaces like Speakers’ Corners in Hyde Park and Hong Lim Park. However, we rarely have any space for such discourse to occur in RI.
