We Aren’t Really Strangers: To the ‘26 Batch

Reading Time: < 1 minute

By Peh Zhi Ning (25A01B)

Coming into a new school can be scary. Scratch that. We’ve all tasted the anxiety and nervousness of the First Day, and felt the trepidation that laces your shoes. For the new batch of Year Fives coming into Raffles Institution on 7 February, it’s normal to feel the jitters.

New friends, new subjects, new clothes (except for the RI Y1-4 guys) – entering RI can feel positively foreign. It may take a while to familiarise yourself with the maze of lecture theatres, to figure out what canteen stall is your favourite, or to find shortcuts back home.  Luckily, you’ll have time to acclimatise yourself within the school – with Orientation.

But this video isn’t about Orientation, you cheeky Wayfinders. Rather, it’s about the people who will greet you as you don your Ori shirts for the first time. On 7 February 2025, as you step through the school gates, and walk through the corridors to Orientation, you’ll meet the House Captains and Council Presidents for the second time.

After all, once you’ve watched this video, they aren’t really strangers.

Have you ever noticed what goes on behind the spotlight?

On November 13th, Press had the opportunity to visit the Star Performing Arts Centre for an exclusive backstage tour. We were given a tour of the different venues the Star Theatre offers, the huge stage, and the many many seating options.

What we did not notice at first, however, were the control rooms.

In an era of skyrocketing prices and GST hikes, becoming a victim of inflation feels inevitable. Eating within the constraints of a limited allowance, therefore, becomes increasingly difficult. To avoid sacrificing your social life and insatiable appetite for outrageous prices, we sought to find 7 affordable meals and dining spots for under $7. Star Vista is located at Buona Vista – a few MRT stops away from Marymount, making it a popular hang-out spot after school and a good alternative from the usual Junction 8. After scouring through endless menus and deals, we settled on the food options below:

To (Understanding) Physics and Beyond!: Teachers’ Day 2024

Reading Time: 5 minutes

By Qiu Bixin (25A01A)

Featuring Mr Soh Wei Kuan
Special thanks to Teo Hui Sian (25S06C) and Keng Yi, Nicole (25S03S)

As the three of us walked into the interview, I had no idea what to expect. Out of the three of us, I was the only one who hadn’t taken Physics since Year 2, a good three years ago—if he started talking about some Physics concept in the middle of the interview, my mind would go completely blank.

Once the interview started though, I heaved a sigh of relief. Other than the fact that no actual Physics was involved in the interview, Mr Soh broke down his teaching method in a very digestible way—a way that even someone who has no knowledge of Physics concepts can understand. This can be credited to Mr Soh’s extensive experience in teaching Physics, as although this is his first year teaching in RI, Mr Soh had previously taught Physics in Nanyang JC (NYJC) for more than two decades.

Special Edition: Teachers’ Day 2024

Reading Time: 2 minutes

By Raffles Press ’25

Foreword by Teo Hui Sian (25S06C), Chairperson, Raffles Press ’25

I’ve never had a teacher try to convince me to be one. In fact, it seems almost ubiquitous for teachers to jokingly warn a classroom of students against it – “don’t become a teacher”. It’s a faux piece of cautionary advice that seeks to amuse, but perhaps it’s worth reflecting on.
