CCA Previews ’18: Chinese Orchestra

Reading Time: 4 minutes

By Koh Yin Jie (18S03Q), Chairperson, Erhu

Hear the name Chinese Orchestra and you will immediately think of old men clad in silk attire playing ancient instruments, or perhaps you will get reminded of the same boring Chinese New Year songs you hear every January, or maybe you will associate it with a concert full of exotic-sounding pieces that you only go to because your classmates begged you to.

Well, there’s no denying that the Chinese Orchestra does entail those things mentioned above, but RJCO is much, much more than that.

CCA Previews ’18: CLDCS

Reading Time: 4 minutes

By Yu Shangchen (18S02A), Chairperson, Zhang Chang (18S06F), Vice-Chairperson and Sally Yang (18S05A), Secretary

No one really knows what “CLDCS” stands for. For one, the “L” in the “CLDCS” has been given a wide range of meanings, including Literature, Language and Linguistics. (Officially, it is “Literary”). Funnily enough, this says nothing about what CLDCS actually does – we are neither a book club nor a Chinese Writer’s Guild. In fact, CLDCS is a performing arts CCA with three unique divisions: Calligraphy, Drama and Songwriting.

CCA Previews ’18: Chamber Ensemble

Everything about school-based string ensembles screams pretentiousness: from the French “ensemble” (meaning “together”) with its nasal “en” and muffled final syllable, to the glossy Western suits which hang baggily over the young performers, to the smug way a self-proclaimed student musician tells you the difference between a violin and a viola. If you’ve dropped by the Players booth during Open House, you might have noticed that we included a “Terms and Conditions Apply” on our board, where it says that we have CCA every Wednesday. And if you’re a prospective member, you’ll soon learn that, Terms and Conditions do indeed apply. While we seemingly only have one stated CCA day, this only applies to non production periods and admittedly, we have productions back to back throughout the year. Players is definitely not for the faint of heart, for daily CCA sessions are definitely not uncommon during production periods. Split into sub-committees for productions, there will be a wide variety of activities that a player can be involved in.

CCA Previews ’17: Raffles Press

Reading Time: 3 minutes

By Bay Jia Wei (17S06R), Chairperson

It is odd—how after editing the tenth CCA Preview, I am still struggling to put Press into words. It is odd, because it is always the other way round. Probably no CCA in RI has shared such great affinity with Google Docs, Microsoft Word, and WordPress; or the odd tiff with blank pages on 3 am mornings when the mind starts to be more functional.
