When you think of the phrase “community advocates”, you might think of globally esteemed philanthropists including Bill Clinton and Warren Buffett, youth activists such as Greta Thunberg, or even celebrity advocates like Angelina Jolie. However, ordinary people can lead volunteering efforts too. The word community implies that within every community, there are opportunities for advocacy to represent the voices of hidden communities.

In Community Advocates, we aim to spotlight the stories of the people we serve and empower them by engaging in meaningful interactions and providing tangible help. In doing so, we embody the essence of Community Advocates: Speak, Act, Change, immortalising the principles of service and advocacy.

By Abhyuday Kushwaha, Alexander Loh Yi Kai, Ang Cheng Kiat Reyes and Da Zhengyu

“Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without.”

Confucius

RI (Y5-6) Chinese Orchestra (or RICO for short) is musical first, and Chinese second. Based on the Western symphonic orchestra, it is made up of five sections: the soulful Winds (吹管) carrying the overtones, the vibrant Plucked Strings (弹波) blending the harmonies, the Bowed Strings (胡琴) unifying the melody, the ever-present Cellobass (低音弦) bringing a deep yet playful undertone, and the bombastic Percussion (打击乐) forming  the heart of the Orchestra.

CCA Previews ’23: Art Club

Reading Time: 4 minutes

By Huang Yuan-Ching (Vice-Chairperson)

Welcome to Art Club! The place where experienced artists and amateurs alike come together to create. Here, you would find the perfect balance between ‘Art’ and ‘Club’, and seek refuge in the comfort of making art amidst hectic JC life.

Aspiring Art Clubbers can expect Wednesday 9am–12pm sessions that are chill and laid-back, yet not lacking in artistic rigour whatsoever. A typical session would begin with a lesson on a new skill or medium by our patient and experienced instructors, followed by ample time to experiment and explore said skill/medium on our own, and ending with a gallery walk where we share and discuss our artworks and processes.

Have you ever watched guitarists on YouTube in wonder and admiration, and aspired to be just like them? Well, fret not! Raffles Institution Guitar Ensemble (RJGE) is here! RJGE is a fully fledged Niibori guitar ensemble and we dabble in a myriad of musical genres, ranging from folk, to classical, to pop.

We started off our year with an internal farewell concert where we split into small groups and were given the chance to perform our personal favourites. We allowed our creativity to run wild by experimenting with multifarious guitar techniques which synergised with one another to produce melodic masterpieces.
