“Vocal Delights was a very relaxed concert with great music, and was definitely one of the best performances of all the concerts I have been to.”

As aptly described by Wei Lin (17S03N), Vocal Delights was not just a night of enjoyment for the viewers, but also a first-class showcase of the best singing talents in town.

Sayang, Sayang: Singapore Writers Festival 2016

Reading Time: 6 minutes

It is an oft-repeated declaration that Singapore does not have many arts events — and that those it has are largely inaccessible to the layman, being held by an “inner circle” of “artsy people”, who are largely interested in engaging themselves and their friends, except when trying to garner support for their products and productions.

Litweek

Students may have noticed quotes that have materialised on the walls next to lifts, lecture theatres and corridors over the paste week. Examples include “There is a castle on a cloud” and “And miles to go before I sleep” (fittingly written outside LT1). Reactions ranged from pleasant surprise to bewilderment.  As one student put it, “just because it’s pretty doesn’t mean it’s not vandalism”.

The quotes alone, however, constituted only a small part of this year’s Literature Week (abbreviated as Litweek) in RI. Following the theme of “War”, a string of exciting activities were organised for students throughout the week, and the canteen turned  into an active area for literature-related setups.

In a packed Lecture Theatre decorated with a Christmas tree, stockings and even a cardboard reindeer, the audience was filled with festive cheer as they eagerly awaited this year’s installment of Vocal Delights.Vocal Delights 2016, true to the season, offered a blend of the ever pervasive pop songs and springy Christmas tunes bound to please – all to be performed fully a capella. Soon after the seats were filled and the obligatory selfies were taken, the emcees, Angela and Lee Yi, were onstage to announce the arrival of guests from the concert beneficiary Club Rainbow, a non-profit organization providing services for chronically ill children and their families With a gentle reminder from Angela to put any beeping devices on silent to avoid any ‘unintended musical accompaniment’, Vocal Delights began proper to the sound of spirited cheers from the audience.
