In a world where every headline is a ripple from a decision made behind closed-doors, this is your front-row seat to understanding—and simulating—those very decisions.
Here, global crises are dissected, diplomacy is tested, and the art of negotiation comes alive—all within Raffles Institution’s premier international affairs and Model United Nations (MUN) club. Welcome to the History and Strategic Affairs Society (HSTA).
So, what exactly is MUN?
Every day, world leaders oversee battalions of soldiers, direct billions in funding, and wield the power to alter the fate of nations—and in turn, shape the future of our world. For the duration of three days, this power could be yours!
Step into the shoes of a diplomat on the world stage, where every word you say carries weight. Experience the contentious and tense negotiations of experienced politicians, as you discover the nations and voices that make up our world.
This, in essence, is Model United Nations: a three-day simulation of the political debate and negotiations that underpins our world’s governance.
Aside from vivid discussions on geopolitical issues and international affairs, MUN is also the perfect environment to build new friendships, create lasting memories and revel in the lighter side of diplomacy—from late-night socials and spirited delegate mixers to inside jokes forged in the heat of debate.
MUN is the perfect opportunity to not only delve into the workings of geopolitics but also make new friends from all walks of life.
What We Do
Every year, over 300 students from over 20 schools across Singapore arrive at Raffles Institution to participate in HSTA’s flagship conference—Raffles Model United Nations (RMUN). All our members are deeply involved in the preparation process, ranging from chairing councils and writing study guides, to working out publicity designs and sorting admin work.
Aside from RMUN preparation, we also explore a vast range of topics including international law, economic policymaking, security strategy and abstract political philosophy in our weekly CCA sessions.
We delve into the intricate relationship between policymakers and their constituents, unpacking the power dynamics, persuasion tactics and the occasional political maneuvering that shape governance.
While this may sound like HSTA revolves solely around the “political and economic state of the world”, fret not! Every week, we balance intellectual rigor with fun-filled activities such as mooting, war-games and interest-based presentations.
Here, our members’ skills are put to the test, where academic rigour meets practical application, critical thinking and a healthy dose of friendly competition. Did we mention we also hold annual outdoor amazing races?
Why should you join HSTA?
As a member, you can expect to emerge not only with newfound knowledge regarding geopolitical affairs, but also master the art of persuasion, public speaking and leadership.
Gain confidence in presenting complex and intricate ideas, and dive deep into the complex dance between nations called international affairs. Learn how to sell an idea, and command attention from a packed committee room, a sceptical audience, or even the most seasoned of debaters.
Lastly, as the organization behind RMUN, you will have direct impact on the growth and development of fresh delegates, giving you the unique opportunity to mentor, inspire, and shape the next generation of changemakers. Here, you won’t just be learning about the world—you’ll be actively preparing to lead it.
(Also, did we also mention that RMUN is one of Singapore’s most-prestigious conferences and Singapore’s oldest MUN conference? Here is your opportunity to be part of our storied organization—one that continues to shape future leaders and set the gold standard for MUN in the region.)
Welcome to HSTA. We look forward to seeing you, future leaders and policymakers, as we strive to change the world, one step at a time.
