Squash is a high-intensity sport where players alternate in striking the ball with their rackets onto the playable surfaces of the four walls of the court. How do you win? You simply hit the ball such that the opponent is not able to return the shot. Do not underestimate the tiny, black ball! When hit with the right technique, it can reach unbelievable speeds of up to 280 km/h. (Fun fact: Squash is the only racket sport where the opponent stands next to you rather than opposite you!)
Squash allows players to make use of all four walls as long as the ball touches the front wall in every shot. This means players can make use of different angles of the walls to confuse their opponent, making Squash an extremely strategic game. Not only that, Squash is also physically demanding—playing one hour of Squash can burn up to 800 calories!
The best part is that Squash is an indoor sport, making it perfect for those who want to exercise without getting a tan!
Squash training is held twice a week during non-peak periods, and thrice a week during peak periods like NSG season. Training sessions are usually on Mondays (5.00pm to 7.00pm), Wednesdays (8.00am to 11.00am) and Fridays (5.00pm to 7.00pm).
Mondays are usually dedicated to building our physical fitness, which involves track runs, vertical stair runs, court PT and more! On Wednesdays and Fridays, we go to the Serangoon Gardens Country Club courts, where we will start off with a wide variety of drills to train our technique and sharpen our skills. These training sessions end with friendly matches to practise what we have learnt. Each training session, be it Physical Fitness or Skills training, involves every person on the team, working hard and encouraging one another to constantly better ourselves, whilst having fun along the way!
When looking for prospective new members, competitive squash-playing experience is preferred, but individuals with basic racquet skills can come for our trials too. Everyone has a chance!
Many might say that Squash is an individual sport, but here at Raffles Squash, we are all in this together. Our CCA may be small, but that allows for closer and more intimate bonding, ensuring that every member gets sufficient attention and resources to improve their skills.
From everyone here in Raffles Squash, we would like to invite you to come down for our trials this year and be part of our Raffles Squash family!
