Sustainable, biodegradable, eco-friendly — these buzzwords are everywhere, and it is natural to feel that the whole discussion about the environment is overhyped. With many jumping on the environmental bandwagon, it can seem like everyone is a self-proclaimed environmentalist. But what does it really mean to have a calling to the environment? At Raffles One Earth, we have just the answer for you.
So, what on EARTH do we actually do?
At One Earth, we are dedicated to fostering a green culture at RI. Aligning with the school’s mission to be a pioneer in green stewardship, we execute several initiatives throughout the year. These initiatives are aimed at engaging, educating, and encouraging fellow Rafflesians to adopt a sustainable lifestyle, both in and out of school. We also organise sustainability related learning journeys for the student cohort in RI.
Still wondering why you should join us?
Well, the reason is simple: you care about the environment. And this passion fuels you to do something about it in your short JC years. If this “ONE” reason is insufficient to convince you, here are five more “EARTH” reasons why.
- Engaging in meaningful environmental activities
From integrating recycling into sports events like the NSG season to starting podcasts where we discuss ways to lead a sustainable lifestyle in school with teachers, we incorporate eco-friendly components into activities of any and every form! We have also started a CE04 project, where we recruit our peers to sort out recyclables from recycling bins every week with us.
- Advocating for sustainable practices
By making publicity posts for occasions like Earth Week that eventually make it to the school’s Instagram account, Team Raffles, we don’t only publicise our CCA efforts (such as Recycling Right at RI!) but also share trivia and fun facts related to sustainability.
- Reducing our impact on the environment
Lead by example! As part of our attempt to reduce general waste in school, we have set up three new recycling bins in the school compound for the first time in sixteen years! These bins stand out with our very own colourful posters, serving as loud reminders for us to recycle.
- Teaming up with like-minded individuals
As we are a tiny CCA, there are plenty of chances to collaborate with fellow CCA members to have student-directed discussions. Our CCA sessions are held every Wednesday from 0830 to 1100 hrs in a Block B classroom (with the air conditioning off, fans on and windows wide open for low-energy ventilation of course!).
- Honing leadership and communication skills
During NSG and Gryphon Recall, we have worked closely with numerous CCALs so that the involved CCAs recycle their drink receptacles. Besides, we have successfully replaced single-use disposable cutleries with reusable cutleries brought by students themselves during the Student Leaders’ Camp! These outreach initiatives require committed liaising with external personnel, offering perfect opportunities to develop one’s ability to lead and communicate!
Moving forward, what do we have in mind?
Exploring solar panels on the rooftops of RI? Reselling old uniforms to support an eco-related cause? Organising learning journeys to discover more about aquaculture and the recycling of water? The future of this CCA awaits a myriad of exciting activities, including (but certainly not limited to!) the aforementioned. The potential of what we can achieve in the future lies in your hand. Wait no more! Join One Earth and together, let’s create a greener future for all of us!
