CCA Previews ’25: Tennis

Reading Time: 3 minutes

By Tennis EXCO ’25

Welcome to the world of tennis, where every match is a symphony of grace, strategy, and passion. Our team is more than just a collection of players; we are a family united by our love for a sport that demands both physical prowess and mental acuity.

Tennis is often described as a “gentleman’s sport,” and for good reason. The game is played with an air of elegance, from the fluid motions of a forehand swing to the precision of a well-placed serve. Each point is a dance, a delicate interplay between opponents where every shot is a brushstroke on the canvas of the court. The satisfying thwack of the ball hitting the sweet spot of the racket and the swift ballet of footwork make tennis a joy to both play and watch.

Beyond the physical skills, tennis is a mental chess match. Players must constantly anticipate their opponent’s moves, craft their own strategies, and adapt to changing situations. The serve, the volley, the baseline rally—each aspect of the game is a battle of wits. Our players revel in the challenge of outsmarting their opponents, finding just the right angle or spin to gain the upper hand. It’s a sport that sharpens the mind as much as it conditions the body.

There’s nothing quite like the thrill of a close match. The tension builds with every rally, each player vying for the upper hand. The feeling of hitting an unreturnable shot, the exhilaration of a hard-fought point, the camaraderie with teammates—these are the moments we cherish. Whether it’s a friendly practice session or a high-stakes tournament, the rush of competition is a powerful motivator that keeps us coming back to the court.

For us, tennis is more than just a sport; it’s a passion. We love the feeling of the sun on our backs during practice, the crisp sound of a perfectly executed backhand, and the camaraderie we share with our teammates. The sport offers a unique blend of individual challenge and team spirit, making every match an opportunity for personal growth and collective triumph.

Our training sessions are held twice a week, on Wednesdays from 8-10am and on Fridays from 5-7pm. During these sessions, we improve our strokes and hone our skills, which entails a good balance of fun and discipline.

A typical training session starts with warm-up: 2 rounds around our 4 tennis courts, and 15 minutes of light hitting. Our coach will then decide on specific drills for us to complete, ranging from rallies, service, volleys and more.

We move on to matchplay, whereby we get to put our skills into live game action. Almost without fail, we end off our training sessions with our ‘favourite’—physical training!

But the excitement doesn’t just stop there! Fridays aren’t just for forehands; they’re also for fantastic feasts! After our intense workout, we typically stay back to eat dinner as a team. It’s the perfect way to bond with our teammates and cap off the week.

Not only do we have team meals after training, but we also meet up on regular school days to have study sessions or to just chat.
