CCA Previews ’22: Audio Visual Unit

Reading Time: 3 minutes

By AVU EXCO’21-’22

What’s cooler than having microphones, speakers and a smoke machine displayed in your CCA photo? Joining the dark side! Well, we call it the dark side because we’re literally in the dark and behind the scenes most of the time.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Audio Visual Unit (AVU)! Here, you will find that almost no one knows that you exist until you mess up: A place where mistakes and mishaps are plentiful, you’ll almost certainly develop the magical ability to improvise, compromise and come up with innovative solutions to make sure “The Show Must Go On!” In AVU, members need to learn to be independent and fortunately, our best friend is Google! Don’t worry too much though, your seniors will always be willing to give you a hand in the dark side.

As a member of the dark side, you will learn how to hypnotise the audience with rainbow lights, deafen the stage with feedback from microphones and mix incredible tunes with the one and only T5 mixer :OO If you’re not sure what any of the buttons do, fret not! There are no prerequisites to joining AVU. We’ll have compulsory training sessions for all incoming members to equip you with all the basics.

Being an event-based CCA, there are no regular CCA sessions. Instead, you will sign-up for any available events on a first-come-first-serve basis, allowing you freedom and autonomy to plan a schedule that’s most convenient for you. Do note that you have to do a minimum of 60 hours of service (which really isn’t as hard as it seems :D), after which, all additional service hours will be counted as VIA hours!

DaVinci Resolve interface: The video editing software we use!

Due to the pandemic, our seniors (and us included) were not able to have the full AVU experience. However, Covid-19 developed a new aspect of AVU! We have delved into video editing for other CCAs. Recording performances, inserting captions, joining different video segments and adding voice-overs are what we usually do now since most events are now pre-recorded.

If all of these sound interesting to you, what are you waiting for? If you would like to know more about AVU, visit us at our Instagram @auspiciummeliorisav, or email us at avurjc@gmail.com
