CCA Preview ’15: Indian Dance

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Are you someone who loves grooving to music? Or are you someone who just enjoys the thrill of trying something new, and rather exotic? Well, you are who we are looking for.

idance 3

Raffles Institution Indian Dance (or RI iDance) is a closely bonded CCA that hopes to inculcate the love for dance among its members while ensuring that each and every member is provided the opportunity to showcase their talents, abilities and passion. RI iDance continues to soar to greater heights, whilst exposing its members to various dance forms, under the guidance of our teachers and choreographers.

We are all about sharing our passion of dance with others. You don’t need to be Indian, a trained dancer or a gymnast to be part of iDance. We accept students of all races, abilities, languages and backgrounds. We are a cheerful and friendly bunch that believes in sharing whatever knowledge in dance we have to help each other. For the boys – don’t worry, you are also welcome to join our CCA! Don’t let the common misconception that Indian Dance is only for ladies deter you.

This year, we had the opportunity of performing a fusion dance piece that combined a Spanish genre, Flamenco, and Kathak, an Indian dance form. This item was showcased during the ArtsFest organised by the school, and was restaged during Colours of India, a production by RGInd. However, we perform classical bharathanatyam items during events such as Sangamam and the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF). Members are encouraged by our choreographer, Mrs Sreedevy Sivarajasingam, to share their opinions and concerns, making the choreography process much more interesting.

idance2

We also do several Bollywood items each year for school events such as Open House, Take 5 and the National Day celebrations. These bollywood numbers are usually choreographed by our very own iDance members, where we have everyone contribute an idea, ranging from steps to formation. Members with no prior experience in Bollywood go the extra mile to learn from Youtube videos before suggesting steps for us to add into our choreography. The wide range of dance genres that we perform helps to create versatile performers as well as a closely bonded CCA.

Nadya Leonora Neo Rui En (15S03F), one of our non-Indian members, notes, “Admittedly, there were initial worries for me as I’m not experienced in Indian Dance. However, there is no need to worry as people here are really friendly and always willing to lend a helping hand.”

idance

The calendar for iDance is usually more packed with performances at the start of the academic year, and includes occasional performances during the third school term. For the year 2015, our biggest performance will be SYF, where more intensive training sessions will be held to complete and polish the choreography, which is to be staged in late April. We will be training on Mondays and Wednesdays, besides which training dates are flexible and dependent on the availability of our choreographer.

We hope that you will be part of the RI iDance family!

CCA Preview ’15: Raffles Photographic Society

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Your first step is to select your target, but of course you’ve already done that. You’ve already seen it lurking within the narrow window that is your viewfinder. Your weapon of choice is already warm in the palm of your hand. You tense in anticipation, finger poised at the ready.

When the moment arrives, your actions are swift and decisive.

Point. Aim. Shoot.

Tim Walker, a British fashion photographer whose work has been included in magazines such as Vogue, once said, “Only photograph what you love.” Whether you own a DSLR and enjoy taking breathtaking shots of nature and scenery, prefer taking selfies or shots with your iPhone, or even taking a leap into analogue and film, you have come to the right place! Raffles Photographic Society – or more affectionately known as ‘photog’ – seeks to document the moments of everyday school life, serving to capture the image of the quintessential Rafflesian in our natural habitat.

Here at Photog, we strive to work in the moment. Our wish is to become proficient enough in the art of photography so as to record significant moments in our lives (and the lives of others), be it in the present or in the future, such that at the end of our time at Raffles we will have mementos of the time we spent here. Photog is also a great way to meet new people as you’ll have the chance to collaborate with many other student bodies, departments and other CCAs to work on signature events, such as Deck the Walls (photos for CCAs which are displayed near the Gryphon Square), Artseason and RProj, alongside a multitude of school and student-initiated events.

Aspiring professional photographers and hobbyists alike are provided with a chance to interact with like-minded peers and learn more about the art while developing the heart for our community. Under the tutelage of our instructor Mr Joel Yuen and our teachers-in-charge, CCA sessions are a merry affair with a wide range of activities that encourage the holistic development of the members. There is a great emphasis on service to our society – whether through coverage of various events happening in school or direct service to our community. For example, we do our best to play our part in the community by organising CIP projects. One particularly memorable CIP project was when we assisted REACH Family Service Center in providing free family portraits.

Sessions are held every Friday from 4.30pm-6.30pm. These usually include tutorials by our instructor, during which we test the theories we are taught in practical sessions when we run around in school with our cameras. Occasionally, this weekly routine is interspersed with outings to photogenic locations such as the Henderson Waves and the Dragon Kiln.

Should this little snapshot of our CCA pique your interest, we welcome anyone with a passion for photography to our tryouts! For any queries, feel free to approach Gabrielle Jeyaseelan, 15S06A (Chairperson) or Nigel Gomes, 15S06R (Vice-Chairperson). You can also find us on Facebook and Flickr.

CCA Preview ’15: Gymnastics

Reading Time: 3 minutes

“It’s not called gym-NICE-stics.” – StickIt

Trainings are rarely as fancy as you might think based on what you see on the competition grounds, where only the elegance and perfected moves are shown. Behind the scenes, accidents do happen just like any other sports, and gymnasts have to go through all the bruise and cuts just for a mere one or two-minute show. However, not to worry – unlike what you’ve seen in documentaries, our fun-loving coaches make training sessions enjoyable, and safety is given top priority in this sport.

ccapreview2

And no, we are not a performing art, but a SPORT. It’s definitely a change from the traditional idea of sports where people sweat it out against opponents and each competition seems like a battlefield. However this is the beauty of gymnastics, as competitions are platforms to showcase your own handcrafted routines as compared to intense matches or rallies you see in other sports. So if you are someone who likes to perform and take on new challenges, gymnastics is the CCA for you!

Raffles Gymnastics offers 2 types of gymnastics – rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline. Rhythmic gymnastics is essentially a mixture of dance, apparatus manipulation with a touch of ballet within. There are 5 apparatuses in total which you can choose from to choreograph a 1:30 routine – rope, hoop, ball, clubs and ribbon. Each choreography includes a range of items, from pirouettes and split jumps to even essential dance moves in between. It may at first seem impossible to reach the kind of precision experienced gymnasts have, doing a series of turns and flips while at the same time your apparatus is flung into the air, and you would have to reach exactly at the spot it will land on a few seconds later. However with practice (and a tiny bit of luck sometimes) comes the satisfaction of mastering something extraordinary!

Through trampolining, you get to experience the sensation of flying – without a harness! Sounds petrifying? It will be. However, with the guidance of our experienced and caring coach, you will be able to slowly overcome your fears and be comfortable with jumping double your height in no time! Trampoline gymnastics may seem intimidating, having to perform flips and twists so high up in the air. While it is a sport that challenges you both physically and mentally, it’s also one that never fails to thrill. You’re in for an elevated CCA experience – after all, it’s not every day that you get to jump on a trampoline!

ccapreview3

Many of you probably have the misconception that it’s too late to pick up gymnastics in JC, but just like you, many of our existing members were also new to the sport and are now preparing to compete next year (2015). With 2 experienced coaches dedicated to helping you develop your potential, all you need is passion and willingness to try! Just like any other CCA, practice makes perfect and our training times are Mondays and Fridays, 6pm – 9pm. If you wish to have a feel of gymnastics but are afraid to over-commit yourself, there’s also the option of joining recreational gymnastics where everything else is pretty much the same but trainings are reduced to 1 day a week.

ccapreview4 Gymnastics may seem like an individualistic sport, but in reality, it requires team effort and the support of your teammates, from spotting for you when you attempt dangerous flips, to assisting you in perfecting and nailing your moves. It is a sport where everyone cares for each other, and has fun together even though training timings fall late in the evening. Through numerous trainings and CCA outings you won’t just find a team here – you’ll find a family.

Absolutely no prior experience is required, so what are you waiting for? Don’t be split on your decision and join us today for a flipping good time!

CCA Preview ’15: Indian Cultural Society

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Indian Cultural Society (ICS) is all about culture, tradition and fun. ICS organizes a plethora of activities and events for our members to feel involved in the Indian community. To kick-start the year,  we have an orientation day camp for all our new members so they can bond and get to know each other.

ics

We also provide opportunities for our members to give back to the community and help people in need. In collaboration with SINDA, we organized an Amazing Race at the Jurong Bird Park for underprivileged children. Our members had an enriching yet fun time interacting with the children through the various station games and activities.

Moreover, the year wouldn’t be complete wouldn’t be complete without Sangamam – our very own annual cultural production. It’s one of the main highlights of our CCA and our members come together to showcase their various talents such as singing, dancing and acting. Sangamam 2014, a murder-mystery drama with a twist garnered a positive reception amongst the Indian community. For many members, this is the most memorable event of the as they get to bond with their friends and people with similar interests.

Other than just the Raffles Indian community, members will also get to be involved in the wider Indian community by participating in SINDA Youth Leaders’ Seminar and Yishun Junior College Seminar. Members can also attend the Seminar of Tamil Writers in 2015, organized by ICS in line with the Tamil Language month, and gain insights from prominent figures in the Tamil community.

ics2

CCA meetings are held weekly/fortnightly on Wednesdays or Fridays, and more frequently when our events draw closer. Check out this link and this one for videos on some of the events we have. Join ICS, a close knit community of culture, tradition and fun.
