Why Raffles Palette? A palette symbolises diversity — although each colour may not stand out individually, they can come together to form a painting, which represents unity, inclusiveness and the fact that all colours are equally important. The tapestry that is created by the colours mixing also signifies our vibrant school life.

Choosing the right JC for you can be a difficult task — it may be the gateway to university, but also offers many more opportunities than academia alone. Raffles Palette 2015 will showcase the myriad of choices available for you, our future Rafflesian, be it in terms of sports, the arts, or other talents you may want to develop.

Open House will be held tomorrow, 14th January, from 9am to 3pm. Majority of the activities are concentrated in one area — the Multi-Purpose Hall (MPH), Indoor Sports Hall (ISH), Gryphon Square, Innovation Centre, and the Cage, as seen from the map below. In line with our palette theme, visitors who visit all 5 areas and get their palettes stamped will also receive a special prize.

Upon registration, you’ll be given a goodie bag (with Marble Slab Creamery vouchers!) and our friendly Befrienders will take you on a tour around our campus. Afterwards, you’ll be free to walk around and explore the various areas. Our principal, Mr Chan Poh Meng, will also be giving a talk at 1200 at the PAC. Other highlights include:

  • Different route options: ‘full’ and ‘express’, depending on how long your visit will be
  • Food booths: Domino’s is selling subsidized pizza, as well as other stalls selling tutu kueh, burgers, bubble tea, and more at the canteen
  • A showcase of our house spirit and cheers at the Gryphon Square
  • Performances by performing arts CCAs at the MPH and Gryphon Square, live demonstrations by sports CCAs in the ISH

The programme can be found below, and will also be included in your goodie bag. Alternatively, just approach any Befriender for any information you may need. We hope to see you at Open House!

CCA Preview ’15: Club Alchemy

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Four centuries ago, alchemists were obsessed with the transmutation of base metals into gold. Unfortunately, their attempts at this impossible task were futile and their failures eventually led to the downfall of alchemy. Yet, their legacy lives on.

Alchemy is based on experimentalism — getting your hands dirty and actually making something. Perhaps you may have found yourself getting frustrated or bored with carrying out countless titrations during Chemistry lessons.  In that case, why not join us for an Alchemy session? At Club Alchemy, we believe that chemistry practical sessions should be fun, fulfilling and provide great learning opportunities. Thus, we place a great emphasis on new, exciting and interactive practical sessions. You will have the opportunity to conduct experiments you don’t normally see in the H2 syllabus, and have a feel of how enjoyable Chemistry practical sessions can be!

What exactly do we do for our practical sessions? No, we don’t try to turn lead into gold; neither do we use fancy chemicals to create explosions. Generally, all our experiments are down-to-earth and centered around phenomena observable in our daily lives. By making our practical sessions easily relatable, our members can gain a greater appreciation of the chemistry that exists all around us. Making alum crystals from Coke cans, making different types of fruit jams (that we actually got to eat!) and investigating the carbonation of soft drinks are just some of the many practical sessions that we had in 2014. Moreover, our members are exposed to chemistry concepts both inside and outside the H2 syllabus. One of the experiments we did actually came out in a J1 Promos question! How’s that for having fun and learning at the same time?

Besides having practical sessions, our club also holds theory sessions, during which we explore slightly beyond the H2 syllabus. Sharing sessions by our members constitute a key component of our theory sessions — we actively encourage members to conduct presentations on chemistry-related areas that interest them. These can range from being extremely serious (Quantum Chemistry, Oscillating Reactions) to being more light-hearted (‘Why movies get all the Chemistry wrong’).

Other than theory and practicals, there are also fun sessions where the club gets together to play some games, such as trivia competitions and chemistry-related scavenger hunts. There are also a variety of other activities lined up for our members throughout the year, such as managing the science Inter-House Competition booths and organizing Eureka!, a biannual science quiz. In 2014, our members also had the opportunity to conduct sessions for international students at the RI-Maurick Water Conference.

As a club, we are a closely knit bunch of people who are passionate and inquisitive about Chemistry, looking to have fun doing what we love. We welcome everyone and there are no prerequisites to join Club Alchemy. So, if you are someone who is interested in learning more about chemistry and carrying out some lab work, do consider joining Club Alchemy. Our sessions are conducted every Monday from 4.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. and we have a whole list of exciting activities planned out for you, so we hope to see you soon!

CCA Preview ’15: Raffles Players

Reading Time: 4 minutes

The black box, lit by the house lights, witnesses audience members streaming in as music plays overhead. The actors are backstage, frantically running through lines while the lights and sounds personnel go through their cues once again. The doors close, and the house lights fade. An announcement reminding the audience of theatre etiquette is made before the spotlight fades in. Its orange glow intensifies, and the audience put their hands together.

The show has started. Welcome to Raffles Players.

Hell Notes and Players after J1 Production
Hell Notes and Players after J1 Production

Raffles Players is a group of enthusiastic, dynamic and extremely noisy people. Despite our hectic, and sometimes confusing JC schedules, we come together in the big black box known as the Theatre Studies Room to share and experience our common passion for theatre together. And almost inevitably, it’s often a place of relief and solace for us, a kind of weekly (and eventually daily) refuge from everything else.

We have regular CCA sessions on Wednesday afternoons, which include workshops on aspects of theatre ranging from acting to costumes to sets, and many other fun but intensive activities. These workshops are held by different groups of people, be they professional theatre companies, teachers or even our own members with distinct interests, knowledge to share and thoughts to express. Of course, as production nears, session frequencies increase, and the schedule will get more intense. Everybody will get a chance to be involved. Each person will play a valuable role in the CCA during productions, which require publicity, sets and costumes committees, a lights and sounds crew, stage and production managers, the stagehands and, of course, the actors. Don’t worry if you’re only confident of performing one specific role – we have several productions spanning across the year. You’re sure to find something new or something you’re good at, or maybe something you’d like to try a hand at, in Raffles Players. Here, you are free to experiment and explore, unshackled from any kind of logical restraint. At Raffles Players, creativity and freedom of expression are highly valued.

The sky is literally the limit

Raffles Players also organises the highly anticipated IHC Remix: Dramafest each year. All five houses’ participants will get the chance and exposure to go through the whole production process, regardless whether you’re a Player or not. During Dramafest, be assured of a whole load of fun, bonding and all things good that theatre can provide. Sure, it will be hectic and stressful at times, as is any production, but Dramafest provides a different kind of platform for you to find new friends and learn about theatre, all in the name of friendly competition.

The most important thing in Raffles Players that we treasure is the friendships forged over intense production periods. The immense amount of effort put in by the members is only possible with the support of each other, and that is what makes every single drop of blood, sweat and tears worth it in the end. The amount of inside jokes stemming from half-dead conversations is only a sign of how much crazy fun we all have while working through arduous times and pursuing what we really want to do – to put on a good show for the audience.

If a part of you was intrigued while you were reading this, or even way before this article was published, do try out at our auditions. They will comprise a simple performance of a given script, which includes elements of improvisational and acting skills. Alternatively, if you’re interested in all the other great aspects of theatre, for example in costumes or sets, please do prepare a portfolio that exhibits your previous work to showcase your talent in that specified domain! As the chairperson of Raffles Players, Mohamad Rafi B Kamsani Chia (15S07D), puts it, “There are some things in Players that will make you mad or upset. But there are just some things that are worth the long nights and tiresome rehearsals – it’s the people you meet along the way that fuels the energy of Players. That’s what’s special.”

On behalf of our members, both Rafi and Rachel, as the chairpersons of Raffles Players, wish that you will follow us into those tiring nights and experience it for yourself. We look forward to seeing you!

CCA Preview ’15: Audio-Visual Unit

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Audio-Visual Unit is behind (literally) every successful performance. From challenging lighting sequences for dance performances to elaborate mic setups for musical ensembles, we make the magic happen. And all from that little dark room at the back.

av1

The RI Audio-Visual Unit provides AV support to events held in Y5-6 venues, including the many lecture theatres and the Performing Arts Centre. We cover performances by the various performing arts groups, CIP concerts, seminars, talks, competition and so on. We certainly don’t only replace the batteries in mics and click slides; we are trained to program lighting sequences, set up and position condensers for musical performances, and effectively manage all technical aspects of an entire event.

Most of our members join with absolutely no prior experience in AV, but that only makes the experience all the more meaningful. From the first day as an AVU member attending training by seniors, to the day you can manage the control room for an event by yourself, the feeling of picking up a new skill is necessarily satisfying. While the seniors do conduct training sessions, most of what you will learn will be on the job, from more experienced members that you work with and figuring things out by yourself.

av2

That also means that there aren’t any weekly compulsory CCA sessions, beyond a brief period of weekly Wednesday trainings for new members. Event signups are generally assigned on a FCFS basis, members always rush to get the few slots available for each event (we usually send 2-3 only). This does indeed mean that you don’t have to worry about not having enough time to study. Apart from the usual CCA stand-down periods near exams, you can simply volunteer less if you are struggling to keep up with the lightning pace of the JC curriculum. Some of our members do excel in their studies, on top of actively volunteering for events.

And yes, you do get CIP hours for service.

Beyond all these perks, the friendships that we form with event organizers and performers cannot be left unsaid. In our line of work, we get to work with various groups of students, sometimes over extended periods of time. By the time of the event, the sense of camaraderie and teamwork tends to tide over any obstacles and problems faced.

So if you’ve ever wanted to pick up a new skill, and join our friendly community in serving the school, do consider joining us. AVU is a perfect second CCA, having flexible commitment and hours. But of course, quite a few passionate souls do join AVU as their only CCA, which also gives them time to explore other pursuits beyond school. We have the AV settled; now we just need you. Come join the masters of light and sound.

CCA Preview ’15: Malay Literary Drama Cultural Society (MLDCS)

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Taken at our Iftar Session 2014

The Malay Literary Drama Cultural Society in Raffles Institution (Yr 5-6) aims to foster a close-knit bond amongst the Malay-Muslim students in the school. Each year, we carry out several activities and events, starting with the Orientation Camp for J1s, an annual RI Malay Youth Seminar for upper secondary and JC students nationwide, a Community Involvement project (to be confirmed), and an Iftar session (breaking fast feast during the Islamic month of Ramadhan).

These events throughout the year aim to help the new J1s bond with their batchmates as well as seniors, by providing them with a platform and community in which they will always be welcomed. Apart from that, MLDCS also aims to instill a sense of cultural identity in every member, and empower its members through instilling a sense of responsibility via organization of certain activities.

Members with hidden talents may explore their capabilities and can look forward to participating in several Malay Dance events such as performing during Take 5 in February, and for Malay Dance SYF. These will test members’ dance technique, skills, collaboration, synergy, teamwork, commitment, discipline and dedication. It will also give members a sense of achievement, fulfillment and satisfaction of their dance ability and various other skills required. Events like these will give invaluable experience and achievement points to the selected members. Apart from all that, ultimately closer bonds can be forged between senior and junior dancers through frequent practices as well.

MLDCS Orientation 2014
MLDCS Orientation 2014

The same can be said for our annual Iftar session, held once during the month of Ramadhan. An Iftar is the breaking of the daily fast with family and friends. It is a way to bring members together, to uphold the Malay-Muslim culture and for both batches of students to interact with one another while enjoying a delicious and free meal.

Admission into MLDCS is automatic or by default, and each Malay-Muslim student will be part of the CCA. We do not have weekly meetings, but rather bigger-scaled events throughout the year. However, feel free to lepak one corner with us in the canteen or amphitheatre, wherever, whenever you spot us. “Malay Cultural Society is really a place where I make many friends and feel comfortable” says Azaleah from 15A01D. Indeed, it feels like home for the most of us sharing similar values, culture and interests.

In closure, we would like to extend the warmest of welcomes to our fresh junior batch, and we hope that you will feel as welcomed and comfortable amongst the members of the CCA as we do. Should you have any questions, do feel free to approach any of us whenever you see us. Hingga kita semua bertemu!
