“A Minecraft Movie” — A Blocky Adventure Worth the Ride

Reading Time: 4 minutes

By Tay Yu Ning (25S07A)

When the idea of a “Minecraft movie” was first announced, many were skeptical. How do you turn a sandbox game with no real plot into a compelling cinematic narrative? The answer, as it turns out, is this: you don’t try to make it perfect—you just make it fun.

Released on April 4, 2025, and directed by Jared Hess (a relatively unknown director perhaps best known for his 2004 film Napoleon Dynamite), A Minecraft Movie is not a critical darling, with a Rotten Tomatoes score hovering around 49% and a Metacritic average of 47. But that’s not the point. Because despite its narrative flaws, cheesy dialogue, and predictable arcs, A Minecraft Movie is a cinematic experience like no other—and that’s what makes it special.

The joy and exuberance we get from unboxing blind boxes is truly unmatched. That, coupled with the irresistibly cute designs available, have fueled the blind box industry for decades. Yet, blind boxes are popular now more than ever and while it all seems like harmless fun, it often leads to a bigger problem—overconsumption. The manosphere and incel culture are two of the most widely discussed topics of the 2020s. The sudden rise of Andrew Tate served as perhaps a watershed moment. For media outlets, coverage of incels and incel-related violence all but guarantees easy clicks. (Did you notice the title of this article perchance?) But, despite all of that, the general public has a really poor understanding of what the manosphere is beyond “incels are weird and possibly dangerous” and “oh, the Andrew Tate stuff?”.

In such a landscape comes “Adolescence”: a Netflix series that is about an ultimately dangerous 13-year-old incel that, beyond using the topic for shock value and views, tries to raise awareness about it. I absolutely loved the show, and here’s why you should watch it.

In line with recent rewilding (or RIwilding) efforts on campus grounds, the school announced yesterday at Team Raffles Gala the launch of a brand-new initiative: NEST@Raffles.

Raffles Press was given the egg-clusive opportunity to cover this new programme, and dish the inside scoop on this egg-citing new initiative.

This initiative welcomes a chicken coop into the school, the first of its kind in Singaporean schools. The wild chickens which traverse the school compound, especially around the Marymount gate, will finally be given a home.
