THE END OF AN ERA: It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that Raffles Press announces our beloved cat, Teddy, will be forced to vacate the school premises.

The Ministry of Education (MOE)’s Guidelines for Schools state that “any unauthorised animals on school premises should be evicted for the health and safety of the school population”.

Raffles Science Symposium 2022—Mental Health Science Strand

Raffles Science Symposium (RSS) Mental Health Science Strand is an annual event organised by the Peer Helpers’ Programme (PHP) and the Raffles Guidance Centre (RGC). This year’s RSS took place on 16 February, and featured sharings on various topics related to mental health—from mindfulness to social media—as well as students’ mental health projects. 

It was attended by well over 300 people, ranging from students to educators, from a variety of schools that included Raffles Institution, ACS (Barker) Secondary School and Raffles Girls’ School (Secondary).

Raffles Reads: Land of Sand and Song

Raffles Reads is a collaboration between Raffles Press and Times Reads which aims to promote a reading culture among Singaporean students.

At first glance, Joyce Chua’s Land of Sand and Song seems like a typical YA novel filled with historical fiction and fantasy tropes. There’s a strong-willed princess for its heroine, a rogue prince for its hero and plenty of political drama that I recognise from dipping my toes into Chinese historical dramas. Little did I expect to open it and only stop when I reached the last page.

Vocal Delights 2021: Aurora — Melody on Canvas

Raffles Chorale has lit the way for future online concerts with their 2021 batch concert (affectionately named Vocal Delights) that screened on 18 December 2021. 

The online concert was a paid event, with 100% of the proceeds going to Habitat For Humanity, a charity in Singapore. Recently, Chorale has released the full concert and the individual music videos on Youtube

Raffles Reads: The Secrets of the Sakura Girls

Prostitution is taboo in Singapore; many of us do not know much about this topic and tend to shy away from it, due to the social stigma associated with it. But did you know that it has existed here for nearly two centuries?

In The Secrets of the Sakura Girls, Aoki is a karayuki-san (Japanese prostitute) working along Malay Street in Singapore in 1870.
