RI Serves Up A Rousing Championship Game: Boys’ Badminton Finals 2022

Following a remarkable 5-0 win against Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) in the semifinals, the Team Raffles Badminton boys proved themselves to be a force to be reckoned with. On 9th May 2022, they stepped into the courts of Our Tampines Hub to face off against Dunman High School (DHS) in the long-awaited finals games.

Demystifying the RI Finance Bro

The trope of the Finance Bro (also known as Crypto Bro) means nothing good on the Internet. Images of the Original Finance Bros come to mind, the likes of Elon Musk, Warren Buffet and the Wolf of Wall Street himself.

However, thanks to globalisation or just chronically-online entrepreneurial chancers, the label has wormed its way into the hallowed halls of Raffles Institution, culminating in a micro-epidemic that has plagued the great minds of the future.

United Together: Tenpin Bowling Quartet Event 2022

If you were to google the definition of tenpin bowling, you’d find the result to be extremely insufficient in its description. Not for its lapses in technicality, but for its mistaken emphasis on the individuality of the sport, which was overridden by the immense team spirit displayed by Raffles Tenpin Bowling. 

On 10th May, the team gathered at Superbowl, Safra Mount Faber for their final event—the Quartets. Having competed in the singles and doubles events beforehand, the seasoned players entered the match with not just trepidation, but heavy emotions: for the Y6s, this match signified their last match together.

Rising to the Challenge: Boys’ Squash Finals 2022

If you’re anything like me—the antithesis of athleticism and general sports awareness—chances are you know very little about this game called squash. 

Aside from sharing its name with a type of vegetable, Squash essentially involves players going head to head in a literal cage match conducted in a four-walled court. The game is played with a racquet and a hollow rubber ball, and players take turns hitting the ball; whoever can place the ball out of reach of their opponent while avoiding specific zones within the court wins. 

The match on Monday between RI and ACS(I) kicked off with great fanfare at noon, amidst the cacophony of cheers from both sides. Being my first time spectating an actual game of squash, I couldn’t help but notice both players entering the air-conditioned glass court for every set almost seemed like observing a scientific experiment in a cold, sterile lab.

Coming Back for Gold, Three Years Later: Girls’ Squash Finals 2022

On 10 May, the Kallang Squash and Tennis Centre was filled with an air of trepidation and excitement as spectators trickled in to watch the Squash Girls’ Finals 2022. This marked the first National School Games (NSG) season since 2019, and RI’s squash girls were ready to defend their championship title.

This year, RI faced long-time rival Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC) in the finals. Amidst enthusiastic cheers, Waverly Wu (22S03F) stepped up to play the first game of the finals. The first shot was served in a resounding thud, and the game had officially begun.
