Of Checked Shirts and Courage: A Croatian Swan Song

At the 67th minute, five Croatian defenders look on, helpless, as Mbappe drives the ball past them into the net, 25 yards from goal. Three goals up, France is going to win. But you cannot tell Luka Modric and his team that. At 4-1 it looks impossible to everyone but them. They are relentless, pummeling the French goal, demanding, roaring to be let in. Barely two minutes later Mandzukic makes a defiant run, racing Lloris down till they are toe to toe in front of the goal. He nicks a loose touch off Lloris, and puts it past him. As if to say, it’s not over yet.

Take Heart: Guitar Ensemble’s Esperanza

On the 18th of May, hundreds of students and guests streamed into LT2—no, not for a late night lecture, but for Guitar Ensemble’s concert, Esperanza. The title of the concert means “hope” in Spanish and this theme was illustrated through the narrative of a young boy named Justin who dreams of becoming a musician like his late grandfather. In spite of parental objections, he perseveres and refuses to give up on his aspirations. The emotions he feels throughout his turbulent journey were weaved into the various songs, giving them greater depth and meaning.

The members of Raffles Rock had quite the challenge — putting on an engaging performance for the students who had just returned from an exhausting Tuesday afternoon was no easy task. Despite this, they were ready to fill the TSD with their infectious enthusiasm and energy at their showcase, Rock In 2018.

2018 Arts Season: A Preview

While we were all swept up into the fast-paced routines of JC life, the days of April trickled away gradually, and now, April has almost come to an end. But not to worry, that can only mean one thing: the arts season is upon us.

This is a time when RI’s diverse array of co-curricular activities (CCAs), mainly those in the Performing Arts and Clubs category, hold performances, showcases and events for their peers and the general public. Such events allow members of said CCAs to display the fruits of their labour over the course of their time in the CCA, culminating in rewarding and enjoyable experiences for all involved.

In 2018, Raffles Press brings you a new column that collates all major upcoming CCA events for easy reference and better publicity. Events are organised by date, and this list is accurate as of 26/4/2018, though it may be subject to updates. Events that are conducted by student groups outside CCA may also be included.

Lightning Strikes One Last Time

He was always known for his finishes. Some criticised his starts as slow, sloppy, but he would hold us all in rapture as he flew down the home straight, feet barely seeming to ghost the track. He would surge across the line, flashing a smile. Don’t blink, you might miss it.

The 2017 World Championships was to be his last run. He was slated for the 100-metre followed by the 4×100-metre relay before bowing out, hopefully as a champion.

But this is how it ends: a desperate clutch at a hamstring, feet faltering, the man lying helpless on the track. An official with a wheelchair comes out for him. The world’s fastest man finishes his final race, the 4×100-metre relay, in last place. He is too great a man to pity, yet inside we say this is not right, this is not how he should leave. “Forever faster” we all said, but even Bolt, with his powerful strides, cannot outrun time.
