Like all other events in 2020, the Raffles Business Symposium (RBS) took a different form this year. Hosted entirely on a Zoom video conference call by the Raffles Entrepreneurship Network (REN), competitors, judges, emcees and viewers all attended from the comfort of their homes. Despite all these changes, the spirit of the Symposium still remained the same. The two main components of RBS are unchanged too—Symposium and Competition.
This year’s theme was Food Wastage, a relevant and important topic of discussion in today’s context. The RBS 2020 opening video provided news reports of increasing food wastage both globally and locally, and explained its negative impacts—wasted food not only produces methane, a greenhouse gas which contributes to global warming, but it also serves to perpetuate food insecurity.

“Healthcare is the toughest of all the sectors, should you decide to venture into entrepreneurship.”
Professor Lawrence Ho, an accomplished endoscopist cum co-founder of medical robotics company EndoMaster©, put forth his frank opinion as such in his keynote speech, standing at the podium in the Performing Arts Centre. Sharing briefly about his journey as an entrepreneur and the obstacles faced in this industry, he concluded his address by rallying youth to find their passions and innovate. Attendees of the Raffles Business Symposium 2019 applauded him, sitting in anticipation of what was to follow. The theme this year was Healthcare —which has always been applicable to our society, and is more so now than ever, in light of ballooning issues such as ageing populations, and antibiotic resistance. In this day and age, the number of things that can be bought with $5 is rapidly declining (notable exceptions to this rule: a packet of ice gem biscuits, lecture notes, and the RI foolscap). You might not be able to buy happiness with $5, but you can certainly buy an admission ticket to Film Showcase, and—as our experience at this year’s edition would suggest—that’s pretty much the same thing.
