Somewhere Only We Know: Love, Life, and Latitude in Geography

Reading Time: 13 minutes

An article on the study of Geography, and my experience in iGeo

In the wild African savannah, a lone being scurries across the plain. A strangely-shaped extension to its ape-like silhouette protrudes from its head. A sudden rush of warm air draws back the stratus clouds, and moonlight shines upon the figure. There, on the naked ground, crouches a… a Geographer? (With binoculars, no less)

The Phone Fast Challenge: 9 Years On…

Reading Time: 8 minutes

By Koh Shin Robbie (26A01A)

In 2016, Raffles Press first attempted the Phone Fast Challenge. The rules were simple: for five days, participants were allowed no more than two half-hour periods of smartphone usage daily. During the challenge, they struggled greatly in resisting the temptations of social media, but ultimately pulled through, even engaging in more meaningful conversations and relationships when phones were kept away.

The Fantastic Four is ambitious—with a 1960s-inspired sci-fi setting, a world-eating Galactus as antagonist, and a storyline spanning time and space, the film is clear in its desire to deviate from the 37 MCU films that came before it and its poorly reviewed and regarded F4 predecessors.

Yet, despite all its spectacle, grandeur, and ambition, the film fails at being much more than formulaic and forgettable.

Live Music: Pop, Classical, and Everything in Between

Reading Time: 8 minutes

By Cherie Khoo (26S03B) and Christian Adriel Tan (26S07B)

Live music is an elusive, hard-to-describe sound. Perhaps it’s less of a sound, and more of a feeling. Many of us have probably heard live music in the Star Theatre, or the National Stadium, jumping along to heavy beats in the humid air. A smaller group of us, however, listen to live music in the Esplanade, or perform it ourselves, usually amidst well-dressed adults and wordless classical movements.

Yet live music doesn’t exist entirely on opposite ends of the spectrum. And there is a spectrum, one that encompasses much more than just pop and classical music. Read on for an introduction to the many different kinds of live music Singapore’s music scene has to offer, and challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone to appreciate the beauty in something new.
