And heaven knows I’m miserable now

—The Smiths, Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now

A few weeks ago, during an Economics lesson, a friend uttered a statement which undoubtedly, many of us will find relatable.

“There’s just too much schoolwork nowadays. I’m so behind on everything. What’s the point of doing my work when I will never finish everything?”

Taylor Swift, Coldplay, Bruno Mars…these huge names in our modern pop industry all have something in common. They’ve recently held concerts in Singapore. We’ve seen all the hype over them on social media and news outlets. Fans here go crazy for them. The real question is: How crazy?

After a hiatus from touring due to the pandemic, these last two years have been the time for artistes to begin their next round of world tours. Some of you might remember waiting desperately while the Ticketmaster website displays a dismally large queue number, carefully deciding an outfit to wear on Concert D-Day itself, or queuing in anticipation outside stadiums or Singpost stations, even in the sweltering Singapore heat.

On Thursday afternoon, 18th April 2024, the Water Polo Boys’ NSG Finals Match can conclude in one of only two ways.

The first? RI loses. Their fervent rivals, Hwa Chong, take back the crown that slipped from their grasp after HCI narrowly lost the finals 7-5 last year. The 13 players from RI will have 13 losses, 13 defeats and 13 servings of disappointment. It’ll be red, yellow and gold in the water once again.

The other? RI wins. The team in green, black and white solidifies their status as reigning champions after clinching their first A Division NSG championship in 5 years in 2023. 13 wins, 13 celebrations, and perhaps, 13 bald heads. (Rumour has it that the team made a pact to buzz their hair off should they win.)
