Before Interstellar – 2001: A Space Odyssey

Interested in watching 2001 in an authentic, period-accurate 1970s setting? 2001: A Space Odyssey, along with 4 other Kubrick masterpieces: Lolita (1962), The Shining (1980), Full Metal Jacket (1987) and Spartacus (1960) will be screening starting 10 Jan to next Sunday, 18 Jan at The Projector (Lvl 5, Golden Mile Tower, 6001 Beach Road, Singapore 199589)Showtimes for the programme are available here. Seats are available on a first come first served basis, and entry fees are on a pay as you please basis. (We recommend a contribution of $5, or more if you can afford it.)

Raffles Reviews: Paddington

“Please look after this bear” reads the yellowed label on Paddington’s neck as he waits, swinging his little bear legs on his worn old suitcase, for a family to provide a home for him. The little brown bear, complete with worn red hat, is familiar to most who grew up in the UK, but probably not here, in tropical Asia. Nonetheless, cultural contexts aside, Paddington is plenty of fun and fluff and all too suitable for the festive season.

Food for Thought: Roadhouse

Tucked away in a relatively inaccessible corner of Dempsey, Roadhouse is not an intuitive gastronomical choice for the average Rafflesian, nor are its prices particularly wallet-friendly. However, with its hearty portions, explosive flavours and divine desserts, we could hardly keep this gem to ourselves. Visit this American-style diner as a treat to yourself – on a friend’s birthday, or after completing a round of examinations. We promise it’s worth the trek.

Mankind was born on Earth. It was never meant to die here.

These chilling words are those of Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), a former NASA test pilot who has recurring nightmares of a test-flight crash and who now, thanks to environmental destruction, is forced to till acres of corn farms. Mankind faces utter and total extinction with dust storms ravaging every square mile of the planet. The need for engineers simply isn’t there anymore – just the need for farmers.
