CCA Previews ’18: Rugby

Reading Time: 4 minutes

By Raffles Rugby

Raffles Rugby is a CCA that everybody who isn’t scoring high flyer grades or doesn’t have a piano distinction wants to join. Or at least, it was, a few years ago. Back in the day, everyone used to look up to Raffles ruggers as the leaders of the school who were primarily famous for troublemaking, looking jacked up, troublemaking, sleeping in class and well, troublemaking. Well, people still look up to us, but only those below five foot ten. Raffles Rugby isn’t just a CCA, it’s a culture. It’s a lifestyle that mainly involves spending way too long in the gym, being stereotyped as jocks by majority of the school, and mastering the art of faking a calf cramp during fitness trainings. That is, until you find a good Chinese girl and get carted away to sit at her table every morning.

Feel the sun blazing down your neck? Check. Feel the splash of water streaking down your body? Check. Feel the winds flowing through your hair? Check.

Sounds like a standard trip to the beach, a holiday even, the soft sand giving way to the quiet splashing of the waves along the seashore. Long story short, we are not that type of CCA.

Sport, or not? Defined as “an activity involving physical exertion and skill” (thanks Google), Shooting seems to hardly fit the bill. Unlike other school sportsman, the average shooter does not exhibit typical indicators of athleticism: many, if not all shooters do not boast impressive physiques, carry with them gigantic bags or lug around sporting equipment with them 24/7. In fact, there is little to discern the shooter from the school crowd, appearance-wise.

“Why play football? Why don’t you just use your hands, like normal people do?”

Flying in the face of that impeccable logic, football is played around the world today. As we speak, someone out there is probably butchering a Cruyff turn. And that someone could be you! That is, if you join Raffles Soccer Girls.

“Are softballs actually soft?” It’s a question that most softballers face every other day. While the answer to this is “No, they can actually be pretty hard”, something a tad less hard would be falling in love with the game – if you would give it a chance.

A fast-paced, intellectually and physically challenging game, softball is a sport like no other. Other than balls, bats and bases, softballers also need brains, brawn and a BIG HEART.
