Ever wanted to pursue stories that matter to you, with a platform to share them with a wider audience?
If so, welcome to Raffles Press!
What is Raffles Press about?
At its heart, Raffles Press is built on the freedom to explore and express. Every article (or video) is an idea that is conceived, proposed, and brought to life entirely by our student journalists. Our editorial process is also run completely internally, with fellow student editors guiding each story from draft to publication.
Over the past year, we’ve published a wide range of content on our website — from Op-eds, reviews, to multimedia pieces. If there’s a topic that you’re passionate about, Raffles Press offers the platform to make your ideas a reality.
If you’re passionate about books, music, movies, or food, the Reviews section invites you to evaluate the latest releases like Superman or K-pop Demon Hunters, or rank all the random things in our daily lives like Singapore’s MRT Lines or the seats in the Star Theatre.
Or perhaps you’ve got strong opinions that you’re eager to share? Our Op-ed section welcomes thoughtful, sometimes unconventional viewpoints on everything from school trends to wider social topics. Whether it’s a take on LinkedIn Culture or an insightful look into the lives of Arts Stream students, there’s a space for your voice here.
A huge part of our work also centres on uncovering the voices and moments that define our school community. From providing insightful commentaries on school life to chronicling the remarkable achievements of our schoolmates, we strive to spotlight the people around us and the stories that truly make our school life memorable and meaningful.
In doing so, our writers gain opportunities for exclusive features — such as interviewing our Principal for our recent School Matters special edition, and speaking with members of the Din & Tonics during their 2024 visit.
And beyond that, we write because we enjoy it — for the thrill of the first interview, the unexpected detours a story can take, and the challenge of storytelling.
What else do we do in Raffles Press?
Beyond the articles and multimedia pieces you see on our website, Raffles Press also offers a variety of exciting opportunities throughout the year.
Our flagship event is Pressing Ahead, an inter-school journalism conference where student journalists from several JCs come together to exchange ideas and engage with media professionals who share their expertise and experience with attendees. Together, participants gain valuable insights into the evolving landscape of journalism while honing their own craft.
Every year, Raffles Press also embarks on Prexcursions — CCA learning journeys designed to inspire fresh ideas and perspectives. Past trips have taken us from exclusive behind-the-scenes tours of major concerts and performances at The Star Theatre, to discovering the wonders of the newly opened Rainforest Wild Asia.
Pressies at Rainforest Wild Asia & the Star Theatre for our Prexcursions!
Each batch also publishes two Special Editions, featuring themes that may span from investigating school issues to our long-standing tradition of a Teacher’s Day Special Edition.
What do CCA sessions look like?
Our weekly training sessions (Tuesday, 4.30pm-6.30pm) are designed to develop the well-rounded student journalist. Beyond writing articles, you will gain skills and hands-on experience in areas such as video editing, graphic design, and copywriting — essential tools for today’s multimedia storytelling!
Here, no one week is the same, with a range of skills-sharpening activities planned by our Vice-Chairperson of Training, with input from the other EXCO members and our Teacher-in-Charge.
We also have regular “pitching parties”, where members propose content that interests them and receive feedback from CCA mates. We believe in providing a platform to explore different contemporary pieces and styles of writing, while also bouncing off each other’s ideas!
What’s next?
Raffles Press is also seeking to expand on what we do and how we do it, to stay current to what interests and excites our audience. We continue to embrace the power of visuals, audio, and interactive storytelling to complement our written pieces.
Our shift towards multimedia means more avenues for creativity and expression for both our audiences and our pressies. By integrating traditional journalism with digital media tools, our aim is to make our content more accessible, fun, and impactful.
In other words, it’s not just about writing articles (though that’s definitely still core to what we do) — whether your interest in making videos, producing podcasts, or working with mixed media formats, as long as you have a great idea and the energy to see it to fruition, you’ll find a home in our CCA. With an average intake of 20-25 students per batch, Raffles Press offers a close-knit, supportive community. Feel free to collaborate with your fellow “Pressies” or work solo to bring your stories to life!
If you’re excited to tell stories that matter to the school, come join our Raffles Press adventure!
