CCA Previews ’23: Audio Visual Unit

Reading Time: 3 minutes

By AVU Exco 2022-23

Have you ever wanted to know what was going on behind the curtains of a performance?  Wanted free backstage passes to every school event? Or wanted to wow an audience and enjoy a round of applause after creating cool effects in a performance?

Here in Audio Visual Unit (AVU), you can!

Playing with lightsticks during a performance!

AVU is a service CCA that helps out during school events by operating the lights and sounds and setting up equipment. Connecting wires to the right outlets, choosing the right lighting and timing, and adjusting the volume of different inputs for the best-sounding performance all fall under the responsibilities of AVU.

Now, you might be thinking: that sounds a little complicated. Do I have to be good at music, or know colour theory to pick the right colours? Do I need to know how to use all the different equipment? What if my timing is off, or if I connect the wrong wires?

Fret not! We’re glad to inform you that your lovely seniors will always be willing to provide assistance and guidance on the lighting and sound systems around the school. Additionally, our kind AVU staff and CCA teacher are always willing to fix any and all errors you might make. So don’t worry about messing up: learning is a constant process! Unless you take to the equipment with a hammer, your mistakes are most likely fixable.

AVU also has no prior requirements for joining. We warmly welcome each and every one of you to be a part of our club regardless of your previous experience (or lack thereof). All we ask is that you come with a willing heart and open mind, so being part of the #crew can be a fun and enjoyable experience for you.

Of course, here in AVU, you gain more than just technical skills. You also gain invaluable bonds with your batchmates through bonding sessions or working together on events, and the opportunity to work with a wide range of CCAs, befriending and interacting with people of all talents along the way. Countless transferable soft skills such as teamwork, communication and improvisation can also be strengthened.

Still doesn’t sound enticing enough? How about free backstage passes and a bird’s eye view of all your favourite performances? Here at AVU, simply signing up for events ensures that you’ll be able to gain special access to these shows and watch the preparation work that brings them to life. Beyond performances, an AVU member can also expect to be involved in morning assemblies, concerts, showcases and many more.

In fact, you also get a (possibly once in a lifetime) chance to handle state-of-the-art equipment, such as professional lights systems, a Yamaha TF5 sound mixer, or even a smoke machine.

The lights system at the Performing Arts Centre (PAC), complete with a colour wheel that enables even rainbow or flashing disco lights!
Looking cool!

As we are an event-based CCA, we do not have regular sessions unlike other CCAs. As such, when there are no events, you have more time to focus on your other commitments! We use a flexible sign-up schedule that allows you to only attend events you’re available for, allowing our members to better plan their own schedules with greater freedom. And the best part? Additional hours of service beyond  the 30-hour minimum are all VIA hours!

Ultimately, AVU is a fun and warm environment (but don’t worry, the PAC has good aircon!). You will not only get an exclusive sneak peek into school events (for free!) but you also gain numerous transferable skills from being part of our CCA.

So what are you waiting for? Sign up for AVU now!
