CCA Previews ’18: Recreational Badminton

By Oh Ming Song (18S06H), Captain and Teh Jin Woon Valencia (18S06R), Vice-Captain

Are you tired of having to book badminton courts whenever you want to play a game of badminton with your friends? Are you feeling frustrated from the hectic lifestyle you have in school, and would just like to participate in an extra-curriculum activity to help you destress? Or are you simply just looking for a CCA where you can always enjoy your time at? Well, fret not! Recreational Badminton has got your back!

Recreational Badminton is a CCA that everyone, regardless of your background in the sport, can join. As long as you have a passion for the sport, you are more than welcome to join a group of like-minded individuals who share a love for badminton as well! As our name suggests, we are not fixated on the competitive nature of sports, but rather, the pure enjoyment from the beauty of the sport itself. Therefore, we do not hold any nerve-wrecking selection trials or interviews for our CCA, as this CCA was created with an intent to be an inclusive sporting CCA which welcomes everyone who strives to learn more about the sport and improve their skills.

Training sessions are held weekly on Wednesdays in the Multi-Purpose Hall after assembly, from 1.30 to 3.30 pm. Why two hours, you might ask? Well, that’s because a two-hour session is sufficient time for you to get a good exercise, and also ensure that it’s not going to drain you out to the extent that you won’t be able to fulfil your academic commitments. In this CCA, we truly believe in a harmonic work-life (CCA-acads) balance, and we strive to do just that. And for those that want to pursue other interests apart from badminton, our CCA’s short training schedules also helps you by enabling you to pick another CCA of your choice without fear of over commitment, effectively allowing you to have a fruitful CCA experience pursuing different interests.

Apart from our regular weekly sessions, members can also look forward to friendlies against other junior colleges such as Anderson JC, where they can join like-minded people and share the passion for badminton through fun matches. One can also anticipate facing off staff members from the PE Department, who share a similar passion for badminton. Recreational Badminton is always filled with interesting activities to hone your skills for the CCA, and we can assure you that you’ll always have a great time here with us. We’re always open to new activities, however, and as long as you take the initiative to suggest them, we’ll definitely take them into consideration. Our CCA aims to be as inclusive as possible, so that we can provide you with a fruitful experience here in Recreational Badminton.

CCA sessions are held in a relaxed environment where skills are not of absolute importance – which is, of course, rather unheard of in our school. Hence, this CCA is where you can enjoy a nice match of badminton and get your weekly dose of exercise (NS preparation for the guys), as well as destress. Our amicable and stress-free environment can definitely offer a good break away from a student’s typical busy, fast-paced lifestyle.

Recreational Badminton also prides itself on the huge membership pool that we have. There’s so many opportunities to meet new friends here, as well as bond with your friends through friendly games. As there is no fixed order of play here, you can have a match with absolutely anyone.

Here at Recreational Badminton, you can walk away with not just skills, but many forged friendships. That’s the beauty of our CCA, and we want to share it with you. If you are passionate about badminton and you’re up for a great experience, do join us!
