CCA Previews ’24: Computer Science Society

Reading Time: 3 minutes

If you’ve seen TV shows like Mr. Robot or Silicon Valley, you may have certain impressions of the archetypal coder: the socially reclusive, unkempt, and idiosyncratic computer genius who casually spits out several lines of indecipherable code and wills the computer into submission. Maybe you think it is magic. They seem like literal computer wizards. Well, at the Computer Science Society (CSS), we…

Haha, who are we kidding? We don’t know how most of it works either.

An Introduction to Advocacy

“When the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful.” These are the words of prominent Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai, and it encapsulates the essence of our Community Advocates motto: “Speak, Act, Change”.

In a world teeming with complexities and contradictions, we often find ourselves ensnared in the web of our routines, barely noticing the injustices that simmer beneath the surface. Community Advocates seeks to be the voice that speaks up for the underprivileged, the hand that reaches out in action to them, the catalyst for change against the tide of indifference.

CCA Preview ’24: Chess Club

Reading Time: < 1 minute

By Chess EXCO

As former world chess champion Anatoly Karpov once said, “Chess is everything: art, science, and sport.” At Raffles Chess Club, we appreciate and embrace chess as an exhilarating voyage which allows us to explore the depths of the unknown.

Training sessions are held every Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Our sessions feature members pitting their skills against one another – from dynamic bullet matches, gruelling long games to intriguing chess variants such as bughouse and suicide chess.

Chess club is the perfect canvas for anyone willing to foray deeper into the game. We usually invite coaches for some sessions in both the International and Chinese Chess training, who offer invaluable guidance and support to help us hone our skills.

Our members also participate in a wide range of tournaments throughout the year. March and September are the most thrilling, during which we participate in the National School Individuals Chess Championships and the National School Teams Chess Championships, the two most highly anticipated tournaments by schools all around Singapore.

We also organise our very own Raffles Cup where we bring many other secondary and tertiary institutions. Together in a battle of wits, we forge many new friendships along the way. Through these tournaments, we not only strengthen our resilience and mental fortitude, but we also build a strong sense of camaraderie as we encourage and motivate each other to unleash our fullest potential.

No prerequisites are required to join our CCA, as we believe in fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can learn and enjoy the game, regardless of their skill level.

Have you always wanted to pursue chess but never knew when was the right time to start? Now’s your chance to hop on board and join the Raffles Chess Club today!
