Are you interested in sports but can’t settle on one to commit yourself to? Want to experience the plethora of sports from all over the world? Want to have fun while sweating it out? Then Sports Recreation Club (Sports Rec) is for you!

If you’ve never heard of us before, Sports Recreation Club is one of the newest Sports CCAs on the block, with its pioneer batch coming together for the first time this year. What we may lack in storied history is made up for with enthusiasm and fun during CCA sessions. In this CCA, there will be many opportunities to find out what kind of sports you are interested in or passionate about.

What do we do during CCA? Most sessions revolve around learning how to play different  sports. We take a few weeks learning the basics before splitting off into teams to play mini tournaments. So far, we have played fun-filled sports such as volleyball and soccer, guided by RI’s very own PE teachers. We also had the opportunity to try out other unconventional sports, such as lacrosse and tchoukball! For many of us, this was the first time hearing of and/or trying them out. Celine Low (22S03K) said:

“It felt like an enriching experience. The teachers were very patient because they knew it was our first time and we were all having fun as well. As this was our first module, trying something new together even though we were not that close yet definitely made us feel closer! Furthermore, trying out new sports is so fun because I don’t usually get the opportunity to try out sports like lacrosse or tchoukball.”

18 August 2021: We were all learning how to throw and catch a lacrosse ball with a lacrosse stick, which was foreign to many of us at the time. Mr Lee (5th from the left), a PE teacher and one of our teachers-in-charge, guided us through a better technique on how to run and toss the ball. *Picture taken in accordance with SMMs during the prior phase of Covid-19 measures.

Going forward, once the Covid-19 situation has died down, we are looking to try out water sports such as dragon boating and other sports that just cannot be done in school.

Outside of sports, we focus on bonding too! During breaks in between learning new sports, we hold bonding activities where the team takes time to really get to know each other. Through different wacky fun and games (like cup stacking or shoe toss), we sometimes use CCA time as a moment of respite where we take a breather and just have a fun time amidst the hectic schedule of JC. Some moments that our members would fondly remember include the time we have outside CCA include CCA dinners, or simply getting a drink together and chilling in the canteen after CCA.

Although sports is central to what we do as a CCA, you really don’t need to have a background in athletics to join. In fact, many of us were from the performing arts or clubs & societies in secondary school. Not only that, joining Sports Rec could be an avenue to improve your athletic ability! So don’t be afraid to join us. We’re a budding community and can’t wait for more to join the Sports Rec Family.

Our sessions are held only one day a week, on Wednesdays, from 3-5 p.m. If time is a precious commodity for you in JC, but your passion for sports is brimming, consider giving Sports Rec a try! Even if it’s a limited time together weekly, we make the best of each of it and play our hearts out! If you are interested in sporting out with friends, join us! We can’t wait to see you in the club.
